Journal 1: Nerves
The first article I read about was called, ‘I Wasn’t Nervous Beforehand, but When I Got Up There I Thought I Was Having a Heart Attack.’ The main assumption behind the theory in this section is that it is better to over-prepare for a public speaking event than to under prepare for it. To know how you react to that pressure is the key to success, because then you are able to combat your reaction to the stressful situation. If one were to ignore this theory, then they might be very unsuccessful not only with public speaking, but also with other stressful events they might experience. The most important idea one has to understand before they will understand this theory is the acronym - NAME. This can be broken down into: name grabber, attend and associate, memory storage, and exercise. The advantage of knowing this theory is that you won’t have to go through the awkward task of re-asking someone what their name is, and your peers will all wonder how you have such a great memory! I also read about conversations always dying, because personally, I just don’t know how to hold a conversation with people that I am not as close with. The advantage of knowing this theory is that you can easily hold a conversation with anyone, as long as you know how to keep the conversation ball going. First, you start a new round, or in other words introduce a new topic, second, you expand with facts, opinions, and experiences, next, you could pick up a dropped topic, or lastly, you could allow for a time out. It is important to remember that, “In the game of conversation, give the other guy three chances to return the ball. If he doesn’t, he’s out!” The advantage of knowing this theory is that you need to know how to talk to other beings to be successful in life, whether you have been best friends for years or are complete strangers, communicating with others is an unavoidable …show more content…
The key concept people need to understand about this theory is that you never have to answer a question if you don’t want to! There are also numerous ways to sidestep around questions that make you uncomfortable. For example, If someone asks you how much you make and you don’t want to say a numerical value, you could simply say, “I wouldn’t call myself rich, but I make enough to get by.” The advantage of knowing this theory is knowing how to handle difficult, uncomfortable situations that are likely to arise. Next, I read the section, “How Do I Get My Foot Out of My Mouth?” The key concepts to remember about this theory is to go easy on yourself, do internal talking, and apologize but not too much. The advantage of knowing this theory is knowing how to handle awkward situations.     This was the easiest speech, considering that all I had to do was rant about the story I was telling. For this speech, I didn’t feel that nervous because it was something that I remember vividly and nothing could go wrong with it. Moving on to the next speech, which was the informative speech, I felt nervousness once again. The fact that we had to research everything well and make sure the sources were cited correctly, then try memorizing what we would say for 6 minutes, and aside from that remember to do the speaker’s triangle, I got anxious.     I agree with principle 7 that when you speak nothing bad can actually happen. When you receive feedback from the audience you can use it to strengthen your skills which can also be useful. I believe principle 8 is not useful. The principle says you don’t have to control the behavior of your audience.
