Everyone typically enjoys a sweetened drink from time to time, whether it be Pepsi or sugar water. However, the issue proposed is that of the risk of using artificial sweeteners, which include carcinogens, or natural sweeteners, which tend to lead to obesity. Regarding the topic of which is healthier; I believe that the option of artificial sweeteners is superior to that of natural sweeteners. Although artificial sweeteners contain carcinogens that may lead to cancer, the habitual consumption of natural sugar certainly leads to obesity. With artificial sweeteners, such as Splenda, one risks the tragedy of possibly developing cancer; but, with natural sweeteners, one is guaranteed through continual consumption of soft drinks to develop an unhealthy overweight body. The worst case scenario for artificial sweeteners is the possibility of developing cancer, but with natural sweeteners one becomes obese. Alongside obesity comes a whole plethora of health complications. For example, obese people are more likely to develop complications such as Type II diabetes, heart problems, gallstones, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Thus, artificial sweeteners only pose a potential threat, whereas natural sweeteners promise health problems. Considering the threats that each type of sweetener includes, I would only allow my family and myself to consume foods and drinks with artificial sweeteners. I would rather put my family and myself at a potential risk than a promised health problem.
To conclude, I thoroughly believe that the possible risks of artificial sweeteners outweigh the guaranteed risks of natural sweeteners. Natural sweeteners promise a wide, diverse and surplus of health issues. Artificial sweeteners only possess the likely fact that one might eventually develop cancer from the carcinogens included in the ingredients of the sweetener itself.

According to 2013 statistics, the US is the largest corn producer in the world with 80 million acres of corn fields and almost $64 billion annual sales. Besides its consumption as raw food, industrial processing of corn yields high economic value. Among industrial uses of corn, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is the most controversial one from an ethics perspective. HFCS is an artificial sweetener that is found in a wide range of processed foods. It is produced by applying enzymatic processes to convert corn’s glucose into fructose. HCFS is used as a sweetener in various foods and beverages such as yogurts, breakfast bars, cereals, breads, soups, lunch meats, and soft drinks. Since 1970s, it has become the most economical alternative to cane sugar and replaced most of its use as an industrial sweetener. Due to quotas on domestic increased tariffs on sugar imports, the US has the highest price for sugar around the world while government subsidies to corn production make HFCS a much cheaper alternative to sugar. Moreover, HFCS is easy to transport, %20 sweeter than table sugar, and extends the shelf life of products. As a result, HFCS has become a major substitute for cane sugar for the U.S industry such that soft drink giants like Coke and Pepsi use HFCS in their products instead of sugar since 1984. Some press reports “oversimplify the issues by attempting to single out specific ingredients, including high fructose corn syrup” (“High”). The press has associated HFCS with today’s increase risk of obesity. Many consumers are now cautions of eating HFSC and are demanding for it to be removed from foods even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “has affirmed and reaffirmed the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status of HFCS” (Suzen, 620).
