Health Is Wealth
An English saying says “When the wealth is lost nothing is lost. When the health is lost something is lost…” Everyone has their own ideas and individual definitions as to what health and wealth is. Well, I’d like to give my personal opinion on this question. This could be taken in two different lights which I will share.

Since time immemorial, mankind has always strived to find money sources. As money is the commodity most in demand people want money to fulfil their needs. There are far too many things which are out of the reach of the middle and the working classes. A good education, expensive clothes, sports and games, travelling in comfort, owning the gadgets which add comfort to life - these are things which people with limited incomes cannot buy. There is no denying the value of money and the pleasure of enjoying it.

In line with this, health would be a basic priority; the creation of wealth would follow later on. Health is therefore not just wealth, but much more valuable. Aristotle considers happiness to be an end in itself which man pursues solely for its own sake. Riches are only considered a good to the extent that they help to facilitate man’s acquisition of the ends such as wisdom, virtue, and rational activity. Aristotle realizes that the mind is subservient to the body and that to meet the requirements of the body certain conditions must be present. Health is one of these conditions. Wealth can be used to build hospitals or to buy food or to create a military that can protect the individual or city. These are all things that help people stay healthy and safe thereby granting them the ability to pursue the higher end goods that Aristotle articulated, and to fulfill their…

The Oxford dictionaries (2010) defined health as: ‘1) the state of being free from illness or injury; 2) a person’s mental or physical conditions’. The same dictionary defined wellbeing as: ‘the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy‘. Both health and wellbeing combined together can be defined as the sum of physical, mental, social and emotional part of a person. These are the ‘resources’ for health according to WHO’s 1986 Ottawa Charter, (Earle, 2007). It’s also inline with the health definition of the World Health Organisation (WHO 1946, Earle, 2007): ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’.…

Health is an expression representing well-being. Both a sound body as well as a sound mind is needed to constitute good health; it means completeness; something wholesome. Historically and in a variety of societies, notable theorists have underscored the principle that health signifies balance, the equivalent of centered (Antonovsky, 1979).
