Health Care Personal Statement
After graduating from Oakland University in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Health Science, I joined the Detroit Medical Center as a laboratory technologist because I wanted to learn about clinical instruments and their technology. As a Medical Technologist, I process blood, urine and other body fluids on advanced chemistry and toxicology analyzer to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. These instruments aid the technologist by automating very complex and time consuming process. The instruments can be programmed to automatically upload results to physicians in real time, streamlining patient care while holding back abnormal results for review by the technologist before they are released to the physicians. Personal and professional experiences in health care have given me a vision about where I want my career to progress and have encouraged me to pursue a degree in Health Information Technology.
The implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will never be possible without technology. With information technology the healthcare system can go through a major transformation to contain the cost, improve access and provide quality care. I do not only want to learn the fundamentals and vital aspects of Health Information Technology. I want to apply my knowledge to understand and solve real world problems. Having worked as a Medical Technologist in the highly technologically advanced Clinical Chemistry/Toxicology department at Detroit Medical Center, I have realized that Information Technology is where I want to focus my career. My experience in the laboratory will enable me to excel in the MS in Health Information Technology program at University of Michigan
