Health Care Communication Essay
Slide 2: Communication is the key to a successful working relationship. In health care, a strong working relationship with all team members, including the patient, is important in assisting the patient to return to an optimal state of health. Communication is a two-way street between the sender, and the receiver. The sender will transmit the message, and the receiver will decipher the message , , and can respond back. Communication can occur face-to-face using verbal, and nonverbal cues. However, the invention of telecommunication has transformed the way many communicate. For example, laboratory results are entered in the Meditech system giving the nurse access. Other information transmitted via the LAN are department orders, diagnostic test results, and admissions/discharges. Employees also have access to certain Internet websites that provide medical information pertinent to patient care.
Recently, the hospital added a videoconference service for stroke patients arriving in the emergency room. Staff, and patients will be connected with the on-call neurologist within minutes of arrival. The physician can visually assess the patient and ask questions. The nurse and physician can collaborate on the patient’s care.

Possessing the ability to always be connected to the patient allows the health care provider to multi-task care. For example, the nurse can place a phone call to the physician regarding a laboratory result and continue with patient care.
