Introduction
In this criteria I am going to be explaining the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use the health and social care service. There are many outcomes of discrimination, these are marginalisation, disempowerment, low self-esteem and self identity- restricted opportunities, negative behaviours such as aggression or criminality. I will be defining each effect and relating it to a health and social care setting.
Disempowerment
Disempowerment is when people or a service user is discriminated against by other people who are more powerful. Disempowerment is also making someone feel less empowered in themselves or in a group by making the person feel weak and less important to the group or company. The person or service user will feel depressed and disvalued which may lead their health into complicated problems. Anxiety can be a effect as well as the service user may feel anxious about how they look in the mirror and in front of their friends. If the service user is not expressing their emotions this can lead to depression and in some cases the service may feel suicidal about their low self-esteem. In the care home I work at, some service users panic in situations where they do not feel comfortable being around people they don’t know or new carers. panic attacks can lead to traumatic stress disorder, from themselves feeling low and depression, you feel like you cannot speak, to the service providers about how they are feeling. Again in this outcome of discrimination, the service users may have health consequences from being depressed, can have an increase in heart attacks and strokes and maybe even breathing
