Health and Social A01 a
Unit 3: Promoting Good Health Section A
Illness and Disease
Illness is ‘a state of poor health’.’If a person has an illness they can experience a range of different symptoms, and tests may not always identify the cause as it could be just a cold or a cough. Illnesses identify a condition that exists which causes someone harm or pain. Also being ill usually requires the patient’s condition to be classified according to the medical knowledge and practise. If you’ve an illness then symptoms like coughs, sore throats, runny nose etc are all examples. Illnesses are usually just short term and last days maybe even a week or so. Illness also looks at the biomedical model of health as it focuses on the NHS and doctors/hospitals etc. It highlights the expertise of the medical profession.
A disease is ‘an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism.’ Diseases can be long term and can even cause death. Individuals may have a disease but not show any symptoms, not feel ill and even have a disease without them realising. Examples of diseases can be cancer, cholera, tuberculosis etc. Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems; this shuts down the body. There are more than 100 different types of cancers. The different types of cancer are named from which organ the start in. For example cancer that begins in the colon is called colon cancer.

The key differences between illness and disease is that with and illness you tend to show symptoms, yet you can have a disease and show no symptoms. But you can also have a disease and still feel ill and run down at the same time.
Positive View on Health
A positive view on health would be looking after yourself and meeting your necessities. You would take care of your needs and when ill would turn to a doctor for treatment so you’d become

A disease can be described as an abnormality in the body, organs, or systems. Whereas illness is a period of sickness affecting the mind or body. What is the difference between an abnormality and sickness though? Why is it that these definitions sound so similar when in reality there’s a large difference between the ways doctors treat an illness in comparison to a disease?…
