Have Women Really Progressed in Today’s Society? It can be seen on the news today, or it can be spoken about in classrooms or formal events; women’s rights have dramatically improved from the earliest times in our history. Such improvements consist of women having the right to vote, the right to a formal education, the right to run for office, the right to prochoice or prolife; this list could continue on and on. With all of these advancements in women’s rights around the world, it is so easy to look over many obstacles women still face time and time again. For hundreds of years an ancient traditional belief in China has been that if a woman does not get married young, she risks becoming not wanted by men. As of today, many women in China have started becoming very successful over the last few years. In China, it is traditional for husbands to make much more money than their wives. With the upcoming rise in successful women in China, men have started to become fearful. Many of these successful women are unmarried and labeled as, “shengu.” According to the article this term is, “widely used by society and the state-run media when referring to unmarried women past the age of 27” (Richardson). It is extremely upsetting that in today’s society women unmarried and over the age of 27 are looked at as unwanted goods. It is frustrating that man over the age of 27 with a low income salary are looked at as perfectly acceptable. Why are women expected to marry before they age, why are women put down for making a higher salary than their husbands? It is unbelievable that in the year 2015, little has changed for the rights of women in China. It is truly gut wrenching that even today, women are still not being treated equally to men. It is outstanding that in some countries it is socially acceptable for men to treat their wives as subservient. No sex should be treated less equal to the other because everyone was created the same. No women should fear being persecuted against because of her sex. One can only hope that in the next fifteen years the outlook on women will take a positive turn in the right
