Haruko’s World is an ethnography about the rural Japanese woman in 1970s. The author of Haruko’s World is Gail Lee Bernstein. Bernstein works at a University in San Diego as a professor. Is is an American anthropologist and studies Japanese culture. Haruko's World is her second ethnography trip to Japan.
Bernstein I feel is a very organized person. She separates her work, home affairs, and emotions . Living with Haruko she is dismayed at how with every action Haruko ruins this separation and drags personal and work into one big pile. Bernstein’ s lack of interest in what she looks like summary dismays Haruko, but Bernstein cares deeply for the functionality of outfits.

Haruko doses majority of the work; she works dawn to dusk. When she was pregnant she worked until she gave birth and as soon as possible she was out working again; allowing her mother-in-law to raise her children. She sometimes picks up the extra work when her husband, Sho-ichi, devotes himself to the community. Haruko occasionally works at a second job for a short time. Many women make clothing for the family. This helps with keeping spending low. The community is a rural farming community. Mostly rice and cash crops are grown. It has seasons where it requires all hands on deck; these harvesting seasons are huge to the economy. Though this brings in huge amounts of money; the family has to split the rest of the year from this one transaction period. Families often need a second job or a second income at some point in the year. Trades are often done; an example is when Haruko was very ill she traded rice for her medicine. The next hamlet over is a fishing community. Where diving and fishing is essentially the only economic industry. These villages work hard year round for little
