“Fantasy and Myth in Pan’s Labyrinth: Analysis of Guillermo del Toro´s Symbolic Imagery.” The ancient myth of Cronus (or “Saturn” for the Romans). is at the center of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). Del Toro revealed that a major inspiration for the creation of the supernatural creatures in the film was painter Francisco de Goya. In fact the scene were the Pale Man bites the fairies in half and gobbles them up is a direct reference to one of Goya’s most famous Black Paintings: “Saturn devouring his son,” Goya in turn, as Valerian von Loga has pointed out, was likely influenced by the 1636 “Saturn,” a painting by Peter Paul Rubens which describes the same mythological image. However, unlike Rubens’s, whose focus is on the infant’s…
The film “When Harry Met Sally” is rife with examples of interpersonal communication victories and utter failures. The main characters- Harry Burns played by Billy Crystal and Sally Albright played by Meg Ryan- are captive to each other’s company during a car ride from Chicago to New York and quickly find they maintain very opposite viewpoints on much of life, especially relationships between men and women. The premise for the argument and the remainder of the film is the disagreement as to whether or not women and men can be friends without sex getting in the way. Harry maintains it is not possible, and Sally takes the opposite position. Throughout the film Harry and Sally display a number of different communication traits. Their style of communication is determined largely by the way they regard themselves and the way they perceive others. These factors of communication provide for a rollercoaster of interactions throughout the film.…

The film “Pan’s Labyrinth” is a cinematic masterpiece of 2006, directed and written by Guillermo del Toro. Although the film is considered partly within the fantasy genre, several of the themes within the film reflect certain historical realities of post-civil war Spain. Themes of reality versus fantasy, gender roles, and children and war are developed within the film.…
When Harry met Sally: Do opposites really attract? When Harry met Sally is one of the greatest romantic comedies I've viewed. Harry and Sally are perfect examples of two people searching for a companion. In the beginning Harry and Sally appeared to be total opposites but in the end Sally and Harry both longed for true love, friendship and security.…
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets start off with Harry spending the summer with his horrible but only remaining family, the Dursleys. The Dursleys are not a very good family. On Harry’s birthday the Dursleys throw a dinner party that isn’t even for Harry. Harry is visited by a house-elf named Dobby. Dobby warns Harry not to return to Hogwarts because something bad is going to happen. Hogwarts is the magical school for wizards that Harry is attending. Harry doesn’t listen to the warning and Dobby starts to wreak havoc in the kitchen. The Dursleys end up angry and imprison Harry in his room for the rest of the summer. Harry's friend Ron Weasley takes Harry away in a flying car, and they go to the Weasley home where Harry ends up staying…
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay is a fantastic book in my opinion because, since it is in a script form, it is very easy to direct in your head. The great detail in the story that J.K. Rowling executes perfectly creates not only a good story, but a whole new world. The characters are very lovable and believable and dives deep into their emotions and feelings. However, one of my main problems with the book is that we don’t learn much about the characters. In the story, we are shown a small fraction of Newt’s early life, a glimpse of Tina’s past, and not much about Jacob other than his job and motivation. Although it doesn’t affect the story much, it would be preferable to learn more about them so that the readers…

At the heart of the universe and at the core of each of us, a wild, irrepressible force resides. Primal, fundamental, her vitality shimmers in the darkness of night. This winged creature of darkness, this irrational and often destructive force of the cosmos, has a twin sister. Rational and orderly, sister Reason marches to another tune than the one her counterpart of darkness marches to; she sees the world through other eyes. Reason, always weighing different perspectives, gravitates towards a “middle” state without excesses; she always tries to keep in mind that everything is relative to everything else and in this fashion; her gait has a more even-keeled, measured quality than the tempestuous flight of her twin sister. In moments of thwarted desire, the black bird of irrationality flies into murderous rage, craving vengeance above all. From her vantage point, Reason watches her sister's antics and finds them foolish and immature, and reminds the other that there will be other opportunities to satiate thwarted desire. Reason finds her sister's reactions to be entirely unreasonable. They are, of course – she is irrationality itself. Put another way, the lustful, raging, primitive responses follow their own reason, the logic of desire and its raw, naked disappointment.…
It takes place in a dystopian world, also called the Glade. The Glade is the size of several football fields, outlined by a vined large corridor. He often finds himself in situation he can’t control or in situation he wish not to be in. Raised by his Aunt and Uncle in the Muggles world his understanding about the magic world plays a great role in understanding the unfamiliarity and lack of a home in the wizard (For example, how surprised he found himself in the weasley family and home with open arms and warm feelings). He often finds himself questioning his belonging in hogwarts. In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret” the reader explore harry's inner battle and doubt but being in the magic house called “Slytherin” instead of his current house “Gryffindor.” It examines the aspect of self finding as a person who is trying to find him/herself in a place that is surreal in his/ her…
He then refuses this call when he tells Hagrid, "I think you must have made a mistake. I don't think I can be a wizard." He receives supernatural aid from Hagrid, who is really just an extension of Dumbledore, the predetermined caretaker of Harry Potter when Harry's parents died. The death of Harry's parents actually becomes a symbol and extended metaphor. His mother's love becomes a form of protection for him, because she sacrificed herself for Harry, out of love; the same love that continues to protect Harry throughout the novel. Harry crosses the first threshold when he enters Diagon Alley for the first time. Diagon Alley is considered the root of the wizardry world, this is where every wizard keeps their money, buys the necessities for wizarding, and where everything that is associated with wizards is found. The Belly of the Whale stage is often seen as the "initiation" into the new world. Harry's initiation is when he first enters Hogwarts and is sorted into Gryffindor, one of the four houses at Hogwarts. In Harry's overall Journey, Harry learns the entire prophecy. This new knowledge transforms Harry's identity so that he now sees himself as a "marked man;" he feels separate and apart from the rest of Hogwarts (or the rest of the world, for that matter), and most…
