Harrison Bergeron Response
In "Harrison Bergeron" Kurt Vonnegut depicts a society in which everyone is mentally, physically, and socially equal. Throughout the history of our country,
Americans have sought racial, gender, and socio-economic equality. On paper such a society seems ideal. Through the story one might infer that Vonnegut views the concept of total equality as ludicrous. Equality can be interpreted many ways. One point of view is the American belief that everybody should be treated equally and another view is the one represented in the story that everybody is equal. I completely agree with Mr. Vonnegut's view of the perfect society as being absurd.
Having everybody equal looks fantastic in planning but it would never work out that way. If the government was allowed to impose handicaps on the naturally gifted, how could civilization ever make advancements? The great thinkers would not be able to envision new ideas because of the mental handicap radios they had to wear in their ears. Technology would come to a stand still with the gifted not being able to finish a complete thought because of the sharp sounds produced by the mental handicaps. With the handicaps imposed there would not the breakthroughs that are needed to improve the population's way of life.
Suppose someone did not have the ability to invent the automobile. It would be difficult to commute to school or work. Imagine if you had to walk to work every day no matter how bad the weather is. Now-a-days people complain about having to simply walk out to their car in the morning and wait for it to warm up.
Many jobs would have never been created if there were not any cars. Without technological advancements, the economy would also come to a stand still.
If new goods and services were not being produced, the economy could not
survive.

Good stories often come from witnessing an event first hand. Emotions and feelings that have been actually experienced by the one conveying a story enhances the tale. In “Harrison Bergeron” by “Kurt Vonnegut”, the main character, Harrison, takes a risk and stands up for what he believes. Similarly, in “Everyday Use” by “Alice Walker”, Mama, an unlikely hero, finally gathers her courage and goes against her domineering daughter. Through foreshadowing, irony and characterization, both authors successfully tell their stories.…

I come from a place where the concept of “Public Transport” is missed at all. We do not have underground systems, buses are few and always late. In my hometown, Palermo, there are neither tram nor boat services and if you want to cycling you have not to be fussy: bicycle paths are just in the historical centre, which is the “car” kingdom. Last but not least, people are not used to walk even if distances are very short.…

However, one of the disadvantages is that using public transport is inconvenient. It can be crowded. For instance, there are always too many individuals on the same bus in rush hour. Maybe thieves are on the bus they take. The public transport does not operate 24 hours a day. People have to follow the time table, so they must wait for it. Furthermore, sometimes, it does not travel to the suburbs, so individuals have to walk for a long time to reach the place they want to go. Another big problem we face today is traffic and parking issues. If everybody takes a bus to school or work there would be less traffic on the roads and fewer parking issues. There simply will not be that many cars on the road. Taking a bus will get you to your destination albeit at a slower rate. Busses can take you all over the place. Check out the bus schedule; you will find busses going all over the city. Another advantage of taking public transportation is that you don’t need to worry about parking issues, or high parking prices. You also don’t have to hassle over parking space in a crowded parking lot. Once you get to your destination you simply walk away from your transportation!…
