Kurt Vonnegut wrote many short stories on war and peace, a series of which was compiled into "Armageddon In Retrospect," by his son Mark Vonnegut. The short "Happy Birthday, 1951" portrays the aftermath of cultural devastation and its effects on the generation raised amidst such upheaval. A young boy and an old man struggle for survival surrounded by a city in rubble. (Let's suppose the city is Dresden, Kurt Vonnegut loved to write about the bombing of the cultural capitol.) The old man remembers that before the war people celebrated birthdays and turns to the boy asking when he'd like to celebrate his birthday. The boy says tomorrow, the old man thinks quickly of simple ways to celebrate. Recalling a pair of wayward wheels a little ways away, the old man decides to build a cart as a present. After realizing the boy hasn't had a birthday in seven years, the reader should feel a strong pull on their heartstrings in Vonnegut's appeal to pathos. The boy is without a birthday, name, or heritage; his papers lost seven years ago.…

The given argument initially brings up an issue that many parents picked up their children when day-care center has already closed. Although the road construction on I-72 was mentioned in the memo, the owner of Happy Sun Happy Moon day-care center ignores some consequences from the construction and recommends charging regulation for those parents who arrive late. This argument lacks of adequate evidences and reasons behind such determination and thus it may dissatisfy some parents. Therefore, I think the argument needs to be explored more thoroughly which I will explain in the following paragraphs.…

RACHEL. This was my mother's hat, kind of her lucky hat. The last time I saw her, I mean before the accident, she was wearing this hat. She always wore this hat. This was her bike. It's a long story. We used to come out here, first thing when she put back from the summer. It was like our place to get reacquainted, have a mother-daughter . . . She would tell me all about her orangoutangs and then she'd go develop her pictures. I remember the last time she had given the orangoutangs our names. Esther was the bossy one. Paul was the one that made faces all the time. And Rachel was very, very quiet. I had forgotten all that. You know sometimes I think about her, and I tell myself if I think about her, somehow she's still alive. That's crazy, right? . . . I went with her once, to Kenya, when I was nine. I was in her way the whole time, though she never said so. The next summer I lied. I said it was too hot; I wanted to stay on the beach. I could have helped her now. I know how to tag animals and I can do the weighing and the observing. We could have been friends. That's what she wanted . . . I just wanted her to be my mother. She was a good scientist. I think she was the best, but she was away a lot. And she took risks. Going up on that mast was reckless. It was stupid and reckless and why doesn't anyone talk about that? She shouldn't have gone up there. She was my mother, and if she had acted like my mother, just that one time, then maybe she'd be alive today.…

"Happy Birthday to You", also known more simply as "Happy Birthday", is a song that is traditionally sung to celebrate the anniversary of a person 's birth. According to the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" is the most recognized song in the English language, followed by "For He 's a Jolly Good Fellow". The song 's base lyrics have been translated into at least 18 languages.[1], p. 17 The melody of "Happy Birthday to You" comes from the song "Good Morning to All", which has been attributed to American siblings Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill in 1893,[2][3] although the claim that the sisters composed the tune is disputed.[4] Patty was a kindergarten principal in Louisville, Kentucky, developing various teaching methods at what is now the Little Loomhouse;[5] Mildred was a pianist and composer.[1], p. 7 The sisters used "Good Morning to All" as a song that young children would find easy to sing.[1], p. 14…
