Hamlet Update: A Character Analysis
Because my post is late my Hamlet Update is going to really be the end result. Now when we were at first assigned this project I felt my insides close in on each other as I began to think of how in the world I was going to pull this off. It wasn't until our class discussion were we pondered the idea of Ophelia being the game maker in this play. It began as just talk but then this idea quickly evolved into something much greater and fairly practical. After class Roshan and I walked away together planning out our process.

We sat down together and planned out our power structure, and it broke down into actually being two separate structures. One was how the power was actually being distributed and the other was how everyone but Ophelia thought it was. …show more content…
This list Shows Ophelia as the top of the tower, she is the one leading the plot. Next is Claudius who is mostly next because of his power, Polonius follows behind because he works directly for Claudius. Hamlet is next and he is primarily a pawn in this game, Ophelia uses him as her way towards the crown while actually changing his state of being to make her plan work. Gertrude is in the power structure but she really doesn't have much affect. In this version she is simply going through the motions as she grieves her husbands death.

The second list is is how the power players see the structure. This list begins with Claudius because he his king and keeping him feeling in control is the most important part of Ophelia's plan. Next comes Polonius, it is important that he continues to see his daughter as innocent. Hamlet falls next this leaves him in the perfect place to be powerful enough for Ophelia. Ophelia follows Hamlet and she appears clean and innocent to everyone involved, appearing low on the power structure allows her to easily manipulate her situations.     They were childhood friends of Hamlet. King Claudius sends for them to spy on Hamlet. Hamlet soon learns their plans and later compares them to sponges. “Ay, sir, that soaks up the king’s countenance, his rewards, his authorities. But such officers do the king best service in the end. He keeps them, like an ape, in the corner of his jaw, first mouthed to be last swallowed. When he needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing you and, sponge, you shall be dry again”. (4.2) King Claudius writes a letter to England for Hamlet to be killed and has Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to go along to make sure it is carried out. During the trip to England Hamlet escapes and changes the letter to where Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are killed. And, the rest is history. Hamlet, the protagonist in the play, is no stranger to corruption. He’s angry after he learns of Ophelia helping the king and queen spying, along with her rejection, so he taunts her with sexual banter. Telling her to “get thee to a nunnery, go.” (3.1) or “That’s a fair thought to lie between maids' legs.” (3.2) Later in the play, Hamlet “accidentally” kills Polonius (Ophelia’s father) while in Gertrude’s chambers. With her father gone, and Hamlets rejection, Ophelia goes insane. And later dies of apparent suicide. Lies, deceit, tricks, spying, and murder was all a part of this corruption stricken play.     Branagh’s vision of William Shakespeare’s famous “To be, or not to be,” soliloquy manifests Hamlet’s displeasure with himself as he debates eternal sleep; the set up of this scene contributes significantly to the emotional impact and symbolism. The lack of music and sound in the beginning forces the audience’s attention towards the soliloquy. The quietness in the scene also exhibits how Hamlet is wishing for a quiet death, suicide. Walking slowly towards the two-way mirror, while he professes his conflicted feelings, the camera follows steadily over his shoulder, only filming Hamlet’s reflection. The soliloquy stands alone as a reflection, Hamlet is reflecting on his life and the options he has, “To die, to sleep – / No more – and by a sleep to say we end” (3.1 68-69). The mirror reflection stands as a symbolic example of Hamlet’s self reflection and his search to find the answer within himself. Hamlet criticizes himself while staring deeply at his own reflection in mirror, even though he is aware of Claudius malicious acts. Blaming himself for not taking action yet, “Thus conscience does make cowards” (3.1 91), and focusing on his faults he is making himself to be the villain and tormenting himself. The true reason for his misery is Claudius actions, and Claudius, the one behind it all- metaphorically and physically- stands behind the mirror as Hamlet criticizes himself. Branagh’s tone of voice and body language exert emotions in the scene making Hamlet’s true feelings apparent. Half way through the soliloquy, suspenseful classical music begins to play, adding intensity to Hamlets dark description of the unnecessary burden of life and his ambiguous understanding to why a person would endure such suffering, “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, / Th’ oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,” (3.1 78-79).
