Hamlet Essay Hamlet and his failure to act had many consequences that eventually led to his own death. Hamlet’s cowardly behavor is very similar to the character in the poem “The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock”. Hamlet and the character in the poem were both coward and failed to act. While Hamlet’s failure to act is much different to other characters in literature such as in “Mulan”. When Mulan acted quickly, the results were beneficial in contrast to Hamlet who had failed results because he did not act. Hamlet’s failure to act ended his life. Mulan acting on her courageous belief gained pride and honour even though she was a girl and was looked down upon. His contemplation of suicide is proof that he is very spineless and consequently leads to his failure to act. Due his failure to act, he fails to kill Claudius when he had the chance. When Hamlet acts it seems very rash and impulsive. “[Drawing a rapier] How now! A rat?”(III, iv, 27) This impulsive behaviour killed Polonius. When Claudius found out about Polonius’ death he knew he was in danger and tried to ensure his safety by sending Hamlet to England and having him killed. This is a major consequence for Hamlet because if he is away he could not have revenge for his father. When Hamlet has his last chance of killing Claudius, Hamlet had already fallen for Claudius’ trap and was poisoned. “It is poison tempered by himself.”(V, ii, 343). There are other works of literature pieces with characters much different than Hamlet as well. Mulan is a perfect example of a character whose characteristics are very opposite to Hamlet. Mulan was very courageous and acted on what she thought to be right. “I want to buy a saddle and horse,/ And serve in the army in Father’s name.”(Frankel, 15-16). Mulan wanted to be in the army because she didn’t want her father to be in it. This was a very courageous act, unlike Hamlet’s action. Hamlet is the exact opposite because even though he knew that he wanted to take revenge for his father he still hesitated and did not act accordingly. Instead of facing the problems like Mulan, Hamlet contemplated suicide which is believed to be an easier way out making him a coward. Mulan having completely opposite characteristics to Hamlet was quick to decide and knew exactly what she wanted. “The Khan asks her what she desires./…I wish to ride a swift mount/ To take me back to my home.” (Frankel, 38-39).
