Hamlet Compare And Contrast Prufrock And Hamlet
The story starts out by quoting part of Dante’s Inferno, in which the speaker chose to speak of the horrors of hell. This is very similar to the start of Hamlet in which “the ghost of King Hamlet returned from purgatory” (McCormick 43). Each story tells of a visit from beyond the grave. Even though the visits have “different effects in their respective works” it still shows the relationship between Eliot’s work and Shakespeare (McCormick 44). Another point that is similar in the writing style is how they both make use of pins. In Eliot’s story it talks about his dress and how “My necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin— “ but as the story progresses the idea of the pins changes (CITE BOOK!). “Sprawling on a pin/ When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall”, allows the reader to see that the pins have become something that is holding him down (CITE BOOK). They each show multiple struggles throughout the story on how they handle women and what women think of them. Hamlet struggle with confessing his love for his girlfriend, Ophelia, which eventually lead to her death. Prufrock says “In the room the women come and go Talking of Michelangelo. “ but never says that he goes in to talk to the women (CITE BOOK). He then goes on to talk about all the bad stuff that the women will notice about him and doubts himself. He says “Do I dare /Disturb the universe? /In a minute there is time /For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.” which shows that he views him talking to women as a force that would be fight against the universe (CITE BOOK). Prufrock talks about how in the minute he choose what he wants to do, something could happen the next minute to change
