Hamlet and Othello Essay
Shakespeare’s works are still being used and praised to this day, especially the tragedies filled with dastardly villains, romance, and betrayal. In all of Shakespeare’s plays, he portrays astonishing characters that go through the most intriguing of struggles. Hamlet and Othello, being two of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, are great examples of his writing still used to this day. Shakespeare’s characters share their pain and suffering with the audiences as the main characters make the decisions that greatly impact the play. Shakespeare’s emphasis on their character’s mentality, the behaviors, and their traits play a large part in the development of these characters. Shakespeare often pushes his main characters to the edge of their limits and makes his audience question the character’s sanity and judgment. As in Othello, Shakespeare pushes the protagonist by having Iago deceive Othello time and time again to the point where the character has no idea what is true. Shakespeare uses these methods to test his characters and to leave his audience to wonder just how clear are the characters thinking; did they still have the sanity the characters had in the beginning, if they had any at all. Then giving the main characters various traits such as Hamlet’s rash behavior or Othello’s trusting nature only shows to bring more drama and poses more challenges to the main characters, ultimately aiding Shakespeare’s goal of helping his audience bond with his characters and learn something about society or themselves from his plays. These are only the beginning of Shakespeare’s methods of making important characters that bring his plays to
