Hamlet
Why does Hamlet delay Killing Claudius? What is stopping him. How valid are his reasons for his hesitation. How many times does he have the opportunity to attack and kill Claudius but hesitates and does not go through with it. What do these hesitations and delays say about Hamlet’s character. Hamlet is a very intriguing character with a lot of different morals, ethics, and principles. Hamlet’s morals, ethics, and principles are more on a subconscious level and sometimes Hamlet does not even realize they are there. He has plenty of opportunities to kill Claudius but does not, which says a lot about how strong these morals are.
Why is it taking Hamlet so long to exact his revenge on Claudius? He wrestles with himself over his inability to perform these deeds and searches for his reasons to why he is acting the way he is. There are many reasons for us o hesitate before we do things that are in the gray area of life. It good that our principles and ethics warn us before we do something. Even if we are sure something is right we still delay and make us question if it is actually right and/or if it is the right time to do it. Sometime if we know it is right it is better to do it quickly and dwell on it for days. In Hamlet’s case we can see the absolute destruction of his postponement. The best example is what happened to Hamlet when he dwelled how to and when to kill Claudius. Hamlet literally went crazy trying to fight the battle of good vs. evil within himself. As usual when someone’s parent dies or if their parents divorce and then marry someone else there children are not going to be very happy. This happened to Hamlet, his mother remarried Claudius only a few months after his father died. To add salt to injury the ghost tells hamlet that Claudius killed him. The ghosts asks Hamlet to avenge him and to kill Claudius. Hamlet swears to the ghosts that he will avenge him “Haste me to know’t that I, with wings as swift as mediation or the thought of love, may sweep to

However, Hamlet incapable of doing it and proceed to what according to Ghost told him to (Javed 332). This is an identity crisis for Hamlet, as he does not know whether he is acting upon his free will or upon the Ghost words. Killing Claudius is what the Ghost wanted. However, Hamlet is confused whether he want to Claudius or not, hence the delay in his actions. ”Hamlet is too delicate or too subtle for the purpose. Based on these examples, Hamlet’s demeanor allowed him to easily kill multiple people without regard or remorse and thus he should not have hesitated in killing Claudius, a person who killed his Father and married his Mother. However, this is not the case, despite his promises to get his revenge “with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love” (Hamlet.1.5.29-30). This same idea was mentioned by Sigmund Freud in “The Interpretation of Dreams” when he states “The plot of the drama, however, shows us that Hamlet is by no means intended to appear as a character wholly incapable of action… What is it, then, that inhibits him in accomplishing the task which his father's ghost has laid upon him?” (Freud, page 86). Additionally, Jones noted that “there is every reason to believe that, apart from the task in question, Hamlet is a man capable of very decisive action” (Jones 77). These quotes further support my opinions that Hamlet acts decisively when it comes to taking the lives of others, as such, he hesitance to kill Claudius must related to a deeper…

Hamlet is one of the most complex characters and stories in western literature. Shakespeare has loaded this play to the brim with philosophy and ideas far beyond his years. Hamlet himself can be dissected and interpreted in thousands of different ways; but most notably he is dramatic. Dramatic in every sense of the word, he enjoys acting and plays and he is extremely animated in all of his interactions. The same drama that impassions him, tortures him; so much so that he often contemplates suicide. Possibly the most significant drama in the play and in Hamlet surrounds the sanctity of the, and specifically, Hamlet’s mind. Hamlet doesn’t allow anyone to intrude his mind for many reason none more important then the other. The reasons that seem the most profound all surround the validity of his own sexuality and the judgments of the gender relationships he is apart of. Hamlet seemingly blames his mother for parts of his fathers death. He knows she didn’t actually kill him but he blames her for her lack of grief and also her marriage to the swine that is Claudius. He even goes as far as to say to her “aye madam, it is common” right after Gertrude told him about how all life ends he basically calls her a hooker. (I, ii, 13) It is peculiar that he has such a reaction to a mother trying to comfort her grieving son. Throughout the play Hamlet comes up against many trials but none greater then the challenge of accepting who he is versus what he is trying to be. All of Hamlet’s greatness and all of his flaws come from the same source his extreme aversion to the gender relationships posed in his world. In order for us to truly understand hamlet we have to penetrate what he so actively tries to protect; which in Hamlet’s case is his mind and his understanding of love, and his own sexuality.…

Shakespeare's Hamlet is truly a great play to analyze. It is also unique in that a play based on revenge we don't see any action until the end. Hamlet has immediate suspicion and proof of his fathers murder and does not act. This poses the question, why does it take so long for Hamlet to kill Claudius? Hamlet's apparent indecisiveness to act is due to his constant habit of over thinking in addition to several conscious and subconscious distractions.…

Firstly, Hamlet is a man of thought and conscience. He seeks facts before he can act. His cautious nature could also be seen as procrastination or that he is an over thinker. In his soliloquy, he realizes that he is over analysing a situation and with his analysing he forgets to act. “And enterprises of great pitch and moment/With this regard their currents turn awry,/And lose the name of action.”(3.1.86-88). He notes that when a moment arrives to take action and a person spends too much time with their thoughts the strength of the action loses importance. And although Hamlet does note the importance of action he does not act when a chance comes before him because he takes too much time to think about his actions. Claudius is kneeled over in a vulnerable stance in which he looks like he is praying. This was Hamlet’s chance to kill him but instead he thinks “But in our circumstance and course of thought,/ ‘Tis heavy with him: and am I then reveng’d./ To take him in the purging of his soul, / When he is fit and season’d for his passage?”(3.3.83-86) The combination of Claudius’ position and Hamlet’s extreme reflection has caused him to miss a vital chance. He also fails to act because he contemplates whether or not the ghost is a devil in disguise. Hamlet says “The spirit that…

Hamlet's first response is one that sounds of speedy action, saying "Haste me to know't that I with winds as swift… May sweep to my revenge." (p. 34 lines 29-31) Unfortunately, Hamlet's inability to act on his father's extortion has him reluctant to kill King Claudius by the end of that very scene, when he says, "This time is out of joint, O cursed spite, that I was ever born to set it right." Hamlet truly is a procrastinator, and also a master of his own fate. Hamlet often chooses to complain about his life, rather than act upon his dissatisfactions. He over contemplates, and misses chances to achieve his goal of seeking revenge on King Claudius. Because of Hamlet’s delayed decisions, he basically single handily kills all the main characters in the book. If Hamlet had killed Claudius at the beginning of the book, the tragic ending would have seized to exist. Thus, Hamlet is a procrastinator not only responsible for his own fate, but for the fate of the everyone else in the…

The movie I selected for my movie review is 300 by Zach Snyder which represents the story of the brave 300 Spartans who fought bravely to their death, know that would be the end result. The movie stars Gerard Butler as king Leonidas and his wife Queen Gorgo as Lena Headey. Also another important actor is Dominic West who plays Theron a traitor of Sparta who is trying to delay the Queen or override her attentions of convincing the council to assembly an army against the Persians. This movie which came out in 2006 is a colored version based on the event that took place in 480 B.C. I selected this movie because after reading about the bravery of the Spartans and how much they training they put into making there warriors the most fiercest the planets ever seen it seemed like a good movie to watch. Although the movie 300 is a great movie some of the depictions that are shown in the movie are not accurate to the true events that took place, only leaving some details that are the same in history.…
