Abstract

This paper will present the basic principles of HIPAA and when who and how it’s education should be shared with health care workers. Employees should only have such patient health records as their job responsibilities requires and I will explain in my report why it is important to only be on the need to know basic. I will also show an outline of what’s important in knowing HIPAA rules and regulations when you are interviewing and or being hired for a position in the healthcare profession. 1. HIPAA only sets the minimum level of protection for client’s psychological records. 2. Be aware if a state and not HIPAA governs the confidentiality of their client’s records. It is also necessary to know what constitutes consent and authorization under HIPAA as far as when they are permitted to disclose only the minimum necessary PHI and when it does not impose a restriction. This includes hospitals, sole practitioners, suppliers of durable medical equipment, physician practice group, pharmacies, dentists, home health care agencies, laboratories department that conduct human research, third party administrators, financial offices, insurance carries among other ("Hipaa education –," 2009). The thing to always remember is that a person health care is confidential and should not be shared with anyone except those who have a legitimate need to know for payment, treatment or health care operations. Do not discuss a patient health record in the hallway, elevator, break room or any place that is not appropriate to share PHI. Once an employee is hired and has completed training for HIPAA a mandatory update with a test should be given yearly or when there are new updates, to make sure that laws and rules are well known and refreshed.     The first thing that I noticed that was wrong in the video was when the two nurses in the elevator started talking about one of their patient's medical condition and the care of him.
