Gym. My Place to Get Away from Life
When I am feeling angry or stressed, I head to my gym, Planet Fitness. Whether it’s snowing, raining, foggy, or sunny, the gym is always very busy. In order to enter the gym, I have to open and pass through two double doors. I immediately see the main service desk, where I sign in with my account number. I also notice a bowl of Tootsie-Rolls on the desk, so I grab a couple to enjoy some extra sugar before I work out. Behind the service desk, there are four tanning booths that look like alien spaceships.
There’s nothing fancy about Planet Fitness! Instead of being built like a maze, it is simply shaped like a large rectangular the size of a football field. The walls are made out of rough concrete, painted purple on the top and yellow on the bottom. While the color combination seems odd, it does create a happy and energetic environment. Because the gym is so large, there is plenty of room for everyone.
The smell of the gym is also unique. Of course, the smell of the new rubber floor is very strong, but there is also a fresh and sweet-smelling fragrance: the pink disinfectant the gym uses.
There are many different sounds in the gym, too. For instance, there are forty-two treadmills that are constantly being used, creating an unending sound similar to horses galloping around. In addition, there are a dozen of LDC televisions hanging in front of the treadmills that create a distraction for the people working out. There is also quiet a bit of noise in the gym, while some people talk and others are actually shouting. Cold metal weights smash against each other, a sound that I find very soothing.
Lastly, there’s the water fountain. The rusty, metallic-tasting water does a nice job hydrating my lips for me. I find that I miss this taste when I don’t come to the gym.
The gym, with it’s tantalizing sights, sounds, smells, and even tastes, is where I want to be when I need to calm down and re-energize. Considering how busy the gym always seems to be,

On the first floor are the basketball courts, racquetball courts, aerobics room, rock wall, and swimming pool. On the second floor there is a track that goes around the basketball courts, a large weight room with the cardio machines next to it, and then a free weights area with a few machines off to the side. The first floor tends to be occupied by groups of people. The first floor provides activates for teams or groups, such as a pick-up game of basketball. The aerobics room attracts mostly women with very few men attending the classes. The second floor tends to be more segregated and separated. The cardio machines are a free for all for both genders but the ellipticals are heavily occupied by women. The weights machines are where almost all of the men spend the majority of their time; very little you will find women working out amongst the men on the weight machines. The free weights off to the side are where women who want to use weights mostly go. It is secluded, if you might not know exactly what you are doing or are not in peak physical condition this area provides a more private setting with less traffic. The layout of the gym provides almost everyone with an area they can go where they feel most comfortable. People in great physical attention tend to be in the areas that are more open while people who are just starting to work out or work on their physical fitness tend to migrate to the areas that are more…

    Working Out

Of course going to the gym alone can be embarrassing at first, but it is all mind-over-matter. A person may feel that they are being watched while running on the treadmill or lifting weights, but come to the realization very quickly that the others around them are completely zoned out and focused on their own work out, not someone else’s. Also, they may start to compare themselves to the others around them, like the length of time that person beside them has run or the speed that person is going, and the same goes for lifting weights, others around them may be lifting more or doing more reps, but everyone has their own goals and goes at their own pace and it’s always good to remember that those others may have been working out longer and the feelings of embarrassment do go away. One the other hand if those feelings do not go away, a person always has the option of working alone in the comfort of their own home. This is all thanks to the many DVD or TV workout routines available these days.…
