Guys and Dolls: Play Report
Play Report

For the play repot I chose to see the musical, Guys and Dolls. It was written by Jo Swerling and directed by Roy Hamlin. It was produced by Theatre under the Stars, and preformed in the hobby center, in Sarofim hall. The Theatre was very large and had a Proscenium arch stage.
Guys and Dolls did not have a very large cast. The main characters were Sarah Brown, Sky Paterson, Miss Adelaide, Nathan Detroit, Nicely Nicely Johnson, a police officer and a few gamblers. Sarah Brown works with a church, and is the innocent type. Strangely she is in love with a gambler named Sky Materson. Sky Masterson is a rich gambler that loves the church girl Sarah Brown. Miss Adelaide is a dancer at the hotbox that is involved with Nathan, but not married to him. Nathan Detroit is a want to be rich guy. He is involved with Miss Adelaide but not married. He leads the underground craps games. Nicely Nicely Johnson works with Nathan and likes to gamble along with Big Jule, Benny Southstreet, and Harry the Horse
Act one starts with a group of gamblers making bets with each other. Sarah Brown, and the band come on stage, and she starts ranting about sin. Sarah finally leaves, but the trouble is not over. A police officer joins the scene to confront them about their gambling. He doesn’t arrest them and ends up leaving. Nathan arrives and tells the group about a hotel garage that he wants the next craps game to be at, but it cost $1,000 to rent. Nathan goes to Sky Materson because he is wealthy. Sky believes that he can get any women he wants to join him in Havana. Nathan makes a bet that Sky wouldn’t be able to take Sarah Brown to Havana. Sky appears to lose the bet because when he asked her Sarah hits him. Nathan then goes off and reserves the garage without having the money .He then meets Adelaide at the Hot Box. Adelaide gets angry after she learns what Nathan has done and she storms out. Next, the gamblers meet up in attempt to learn the location of the craps game. A cop

    Appropriate Play Summary

The event I attended was one of the many plays that takes place on campus in the arts building. The play I specifically attended was called Appropriate, which was originally written by playwright, Branden Jacobs Jenkins. The play was approximately 3 hours in length with an intermission included into that time. Overall, the play specifically deals with family conflict and the whole idea of race itself. All of the main characters in the play are all interconnected family members that originally are from the south. The main characters included: Toni (eldest sister who recently lost her job and is divorced, Frank (youngest brother who was a past drug used and alcoholic), and Bo (eldest brother who is a wealthy businessman). The more secondary characters in the play included: Rachel (Bo's Jewish wife), Ainsley (Bo and Rachel's youngest daughter), Cassidy (Bo and Rachel's eldest daughter, River (Frank's Fiancée), and Rhys (Toni's son) Ugly family secrets are uncovered in this play, while a family sorts through the estate of their deceased father. A grueling photo album is found during the whole cleanup process and it arises a variety of conflict. The photo album contained pictures of African Americans being lynched, abused, and dehumanized. This lead to the belief that the deceased father/grandfather of the family was a racist and possibly a part of the Klu Klux Klan at some point in time in the past. All of the siblings couldn’t grasp the fact that the album actually belonged to their father and tried…

The set design and the costumes of the Havana Broadway scenes in Act One of the Guys and Dolls production were nostalgic to me. The stories my grandmother told me about her native land of Cuba and those of my mother told me about her hometown of Brooklyn ran through my mind as the worlds they described came alive on the stage. I was enamored with the sets and costumes of these two scenes because it made me think of my family which always has a big place in my heart.…

The sewer scene in the musical drama Guys and Dolls highlights many directorial decisions and shows many of the different aspects working together. We arrive upon this scene viewing a crap game taking place in a remarkably clean sewer, dimly lit with a cat walk overhead and the projection of gears on the back wall. The atmosphere portrays the theme of dirty men playing clean. The stylized suits the men wear show the world in which they live Broadway! The sharp lines, neutral colors with accents that pop, and grab your attention like the streets above.…

A Doll’s House, by Henrik Ibsen, portrays a young married woman, Nora, who plays a dramatic role of deception and self-indulgence. The author creates a good understanding of a woman’s role by assuming Nora is an average housewife who does not work; her only job is to maintain the house and raise the children like a stereotypical woman that cannot work or help society. In reality, she is not an average housewife in that she has a hired maid who deals with the house and children. Although Ibsen focuses on these “housewife” attributes, Nora’s character is ambitious, naive, and somewhat cunning. She hides a dark secret from her husband that not only includes borrowing money, but also forgery. Nora’s choices were irrational; she handled the situations very poorly in this play by keeping everything a secret. The way that women were viewed in this time period created a barrier that she could not overcome. The decisions that had the potential to be good were otherwise molded into appalling ones. Women should have just as many rights as men and should not be discriminated by gender; but they should also accept consequences in the same way without a lesser or harsher punishment.…

    Learning Through Play

When I am building a curriculum for pre-k it is my philosophy that children at this age learn through play. To accomplish this, the classroom will be set-up for the children to learn math, science, social development, literacy, diversity, and arts. It is said By Jane K. Frobose, Colorado State University Extension Family and Consumer Education Denver County, that “through play, children learn about themselves, their environment, people and the world around them. As they play, children learn to solve problems and to get along with others. They enhance their creativity and develop leadership skills and healthy personalities. Play develops skills children need to learn to read and write. Play in early childhood is the best foundation for success in school.”(February 2008) I could not agree more and could not have said it better. Children are wired to play and have short attention spans because of this we must make learning fun.…

On the evening of March 23, 2006 my boyfriend and I made a visit to Brenham, Texas to see a play entitled "The Heiress." Playing the role of an audience member for the night, we dressed nicely (even though we were traveling to one of the smallest towns in Texas), went to a nice dinner at On the Border, and went to the show. We participated as an audience member in that we had to travel to the performance and were able to take part in the play from a visually entertaining side versus an actual performing side.…

we never expect adults to gather the words that they have spoken and take them back, or in a sense clean them up. If toys are a child’s words and form of communication, why would we expect them to clean up their toys? When I read this it made complete and total sense. I realized that making a child pick up after themselves could potentially do away with being respectful to the child. If we were to ask them to clean up after themselves, it would be like asking them to take back what they have said, and place their words in boxes. I might be being too metaphorical, however, to fully accept the child as an equal and be respectful, I do not believe that one can be to metaphorical. On the other hand, I have had a child help me to clean up. Mainly because this little person wanted to help me. It is alright if they want to help, because this behavior provides insight into their personality.…

The short story “Boys and Girls” was about the different problems that most of us face today: stereotypes and to go deeper into the main theme of the short story: sexism. The short story was about a girl who tried not to be like the rest. She didn’t want to be stuck at home working all day like the way her mother spent her entire life. She wanted to be free, to go on adventures and maybe even one day, become a hero. Because of what people were influencing her to do, she started to lose her true self and eventually faced the path leading to the realities that the other women faced; being stuck at home, trapped by household responsibilities. This leads us right back to the theme: sexism. It is shown throughout the short story like how the narrator’s father did not want her to work with him outside, she was told to work with her mother inside the house. The whole idea of sexism was something that I was fascinated by. I guess it’s because it really is sad to see how people will always want to tweak your lifestyle/personality even if it’s against your will. This short story features sexism and stereotypical situations, which is good to read about especially when you live in a generation where many people get affected by these things.…
