Guy Fawkes Presentation
Guy Fawkes

Guy Fawkes was born in 1570, in the English town of York, where he also was educated. His father died when Fawkes was eight years old, which lead to his mother’s second marriage – with a recusant Catholic. Therefor Guy Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and left to fight for the continent, in the ‘Eighty Years’ War - he fought for the Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformers. I am going to talk about Guy Fawkes involvement in the famous Gunpowder Plot.

Fawkes was introduced to Robert Catesby after serving ten years in the military fighting for the Catholic Spain. Robert Catesby was in charge of a plot that was being planned against King James I, in order to restore a Catholic monarch in Britain. They wanted King James dead and for his daughter to replace the throne in order to have a Catholic Britain. Also involved in the plot, there were 13 English catholic men. Their goal was to blow up the Parliament House with gunpowder.

Beneath the House of Lords, the plotters had leased to an undercroft. One of the plotters: Thomas Percy had gained access to a room in the House of Lords who belonged to the Keeper of the King’s Wardrobe. Fawkes was placed there as a guard to secure the gunpowder they had stocked. One of the men involved in the plot later claimed that the plan was to dig an underground tunnel from the House of Lords to the Parliament - but there have never been any evidence to prove this. The Palace of Westminster in London, consists both of the House of the Lords and of the Parliament.

From an anonymous, the authorities received a letter and caught a suspicion about the plot. They therefor searched Westminster Palace, and on the 5th of November they found Fawkes guarding the explosives. Over the next couple of days he was both tortured and questioned until he eventually broke and told the authorities about the plot.

Seconds before he was to be executed on the 31st of January 1606, he jumped from the scaffold where he was

Guy Fawkes was born in April 1570 in York and at an early age his father died and his widowed mother married a Catholic, Dionis Baynbrigge and it is believe that these were significant influences to his later opinions and associations with the Gunpowder plot. He later joined the Catholic Spanish army to fight against the Dutch and his military career was successful and in 1603 he lobbied Philip II of Spain to support the Catholic rebellion that was gaining momentum in England against James I. Philip however refused his proposition which only encouraged Guido to take matters into his own hands. Some of nonconforming Catholics such as Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby plotted against their King. They planned to commit regicide by placing gunpowder under the Parliament. Nevertheless, they were caught and all executed. After the Gunpowder Plot failed, James I passed harsher rules such as the Popish Recusants Act (denying Pope’s authority over the King). This rule included the Puritans who also wanted change and reform within the church such as the abolishment of wedding rings and the term priest.…

Although the Gunpowder plot was meant to murder King James I and the members of the House of Parliament , it killed a whole different group of people, including Fawkes himself. And I know that he will never forget the day he was executed. He was a good man, and he is often toasted as “the last man to enter Parliament with honorable intentions.”…

In my opinion, some of those ‘rumors’ could be true. Even though they have already found the bombers and they have been convicted I still am skeptical about the possible government involvement. There were many changes in the story of what had happened which could have been from people questioning the story. It is also going to be hard to find out the truth because one brother is dead and the other is in critical condition at a hospital in Boston.…

In the very first scenes of the movie, V gives a monologue which is packed with words that all start with the letter “v”. His speech describes his ideas and plans to take down the government which is now corrupt and controls every aspect of the people’s lives. November the 5th, which is overly emphasized in the movie, represents V’s struggle for democracy. November 5th is a holiday for Guy Fawkes, who died in his attempt to overthrow corrupt government. This idea of striving for democracy, by tying V’s actions into Guy Fawkes’ ideas, is represented throughout the movie by the constant use of the number 5 and “v”. Beethoven’s Fifth symphony, the V on his cell at Larkhill, the overuse of “November the 5th”, and V’s identification of himself as just “V”, all symbolize V’s ideas and actions of overthrowing the totalitarian…
