Meghan Perkins C.Smith/instructor Eng 102 1 Sep 2015 Final draft “The Jewelry” Like most short stories, the truth is hidden and is left for the reader to determine. It starts off with the touché setting of a wife and husband being in love. Guy De Maupassant does a phenomenal job using foreshadowing by keeping the wife quiet throughout the narration. Structure of narration by the wife’s actions will perhaps speak louder than words. The author uses symbolism and dictation to accommodate that maybe everything we see is not always as it seems. Irony keeps this story entertaining and questionable, but what really happens is left for the reader to decide. Though the woman was described as the ideal wife, it becomes clear that things weren't as they seemed. As the clerk finds the truth about the jewelry, his emotion from grief swiftly transforms into anger. No longer caring about what is morally right, he sells the jewelry which shows how powerful money and emotions can be. He is now rich and has remarried, but is miserable and was much happier with his first wife which shows that no amount of money could equal his admiration and adoration he still has for her.”The Merchant observed in mischievous good nature;’the person who owned these must have put all of her saving into jewelry’. Lantin answered with gravity: ‘Perhaps this is as good a way of saving money as any other.’” This suggests that the women could have been caring for her husband even after she has deceased which shows her unimaginable love for him. “The Jewelry” has a lot of shaded meaning to it. The wife is quiet throughout the story, but her words are profound through her actions. Many things are left unclear and it is up to the reader to determine what exactly really did happen.
