Gun Reform for a Generation, an editorial posted in the NY Times on Jan 16, 2013 is an editorial about gun control. The author is not listed, but his or her position on gun control is not exactly the same as mine. The author deals with the 2nd ammendment, and how President Obama is doing the right thing by cracking down on gun laws. The author of this editorial is 100% for gun control, no matter what the extent. But, he has very poor facts on the issue. The only points he brought up was that of Obama's speeches given about gun control. The author does not appeal to my emotions, and may not appeal to anybody's emotions at all, except for those that are ignorant.…

In the article, “After Scalise Shooting, a Twist: Lawmakers Want to Loosen Gun Laws” by Emily Cochrane demonstrates the politics of gun control. After the recent Scalise shooting at a baseball field, gun control laws have been put into the spotlight. A debate between lawmakers who want to loosen gun control laws and lawmakers who want to make them stricter. After the Conservative lawmakers were almost victims, they decided that they should be able to have a concealed weapon on them. Being shot at gave them a different perspective on gun control and felt that it should be less intense. They felt that no matter what, “the bad guys are always going to get guns” (Cochrane). Even today, there is still debate on how strict gun control laws should…

Within his article, Royko uses his blatant sarcasm to help provide the reader insight into his true position regarding gun control, while at the same time connecting to the reader with scenarios that they can relate to. “I’ve been in favor of strict handgun controls, but my views on this subject have changed. It’s obvious we aren’t going to have a nationwide ban on all private gun ownership and registration. My approach goes this way. All present gun control laws should be abolished so that people can buy guns as easily as they buy ball-point pens and carry them wherever they go, concealed or unconcealed” (Royko). As represented in this quote, Royko’s true position on gun control is for it to be strongly regulated and restricted; however, he understands that it would probably be impossible. Therefore, Royko uses sarcasm in his revised “views” on gun control to help provoke the reader to rethink…

    Dianne Feinstein Biography

As Dianne Feinstein, I would raise the appalling occurrence where twenty different parents received phone calls explaining that they would never get to see their son or daughter ever again. A demented killer who possessed an assault weapon and was equipped with a high amplitude of ammunition shot his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The killer discharged a handful of bullets killing twenty children who were mostly between the age of five and seven as well as six courageous faculty members in a very short time period. This abhorrent action stunned our nation and brought distraught anger in millions of citizens after observing the faces of these poor innocent children who could not protect themselves. The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary was simply not an aberration, but beginning to be a normality in our society. Since that 1966 shooting rampage that occurred on the campus of the University of Texas to this Newtown massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, we have observed a growth in these collective killings. Since 1982 there has been over sixty mass shootings across the United States and these mass shootings have only been increasing over the recent years. There has been twenty-five different shootings since 2006 and seven of these took place last year in 2012 (Goldmacher, 2013). A frequent development that has been noticed that flows through all these mass shootings is that each killer used a military style semi-automatic assault weapon to infringe terror. We cannot allow these massacres to continue without taking austere on this critical matter of public policy. I, Dianne Feinstein, have introduced the prohibition of sale, manufacture, transfer, and importation of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. Congress was…

S.150, Feinstein’s Assault Weapons Ban was proposed in response to the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut where a shooter went on a rampage killing several students and teachers with a high powered, high capacity riffle. Lawmakers want to stop the manufacturing of high capacity weapons which will make the repeating of tragedies like the one seen in Newtown that much harder. Currently there is no federal law which restricts the round capacity of a weapon. However with gun laws so diverse around the nation it is a good possibility that states have their own round capacity laws for firearms. Several states has had and has Assault Weapons Bans in place, but each differing in what guns qualify as an assault rifle. There was also one a federal assault weapons ban which was enacted in 1994 and expired in 2004. The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was criticized for being too easy to get around thus it was not reinstated (“Assault”). The main issue for this bill is the US Constitution’s Second Amendment, which gives the American public the right to bear arms. It is such a problem because Feinstein’s Assault Weapons…

In the United States, the media tends to only highlight violence that is occurring overseas when in reality gun violence has escalated to new heights in our own country. During recent years, gun-related homicides have plagued the United States, and many innocent citizens have been killed due to this accumulation of gun violence. Because gun control is a very controversial topic, writers who choose to address this emotional topic must use the appropriate tone when forming their arguments in order to better persuade their audience. Recently, Nicholas Kristof and President Obama have both published statements about gun control. Although both Kristof and Obama address gun control in their statements, Kristof addresses gun control through the genre of an opinionated article in the New York Times, and Obama addresses gun control through the genre of a presidential speech. Kristof voices his opinion about gun control by metaphorically comparing gun regulation to car regulation in order to show that republicans are hypocrites who support certain types or regulations such as car regulation, but not the regulation of guns. Kristof uses a condescending tone as he criticizes republicans in an attempt to persuade the readers that tighter gun regulations can prevent many deaths. Obama, on the other hand, expresses his views on gun control by tapping into his viewer’s emotions and by persuading his audience, with his depressing tone and statistics, that implementing tighter gun laws should be common sense. The contrasting techniques and writing strategies used by Kristof and Obama, when addressing the topic of gun control, are a clear example of two different genres of writing and their respective conventions. Genre influences a writer’s tone because every genre of writing has a different purpose and addresses a…

    LaPierre Gun Control

INTRO: In Wayne LaPierre’s transcript of the “Newton Shooting”, and Sam Harris’ “Riddle of the Gun” both authors touch upon scenarios within our society and lead into their personal opinions on behalf of each situation. In response to the Newtown Shooting, where 26 children and staff were brutally murdered, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and American philosopher and author Sam Harris attempt to convince the public that we need armed security guards in our schools to protect our children. Although LaPierre and Harris use different rhetorical strategies to convey their claims, their purposes and overall argument are quite similar as they both try to change societies view on guns, gun violence, and gun policy in our society. In making their arguments both authors use several statistics and analyze several gun laws to show that guns are not the cause behind these mass murders. How is that we live in a world where security guards have guns at virtually every mall, movie theatre, or airport yet when the debate arises on why we don’t have guns to protect our children in our school districts the answer is simply that we do not have the funds? In they apply the rhetorical strategies of compare/contrast, definition, and rhetorical questioning his speech LaPierre utilizes the rhetorical strategy of identification in which he connects himself to his audience, whereas Harris utilizes the rhetorical strategy of prolepsis for which he voices the opinion of the majority and then paints a picture on why these opinions when put into action would prove ineffective.…

“Fighting Gun Violence” uses its ethos well because Giffords has first-hand experience with gun violence. In the article Giffords talks about how she was shot and that shows the reader that Giffords is not just some outsider but someone who actually has valuable input on the situation. Giffords also explains in the article that her family owns guns and does not want to give them up fully either. The NRA statement tries to build up its ethos in the beginning of the article by explaining their reasons for holding off on making a statement. They could have improved their argument by keeping their ethos up throughout the entire statement instead of just touch and go.…

In his opening paragraph, Nicholas Kristof draws his opinion of gun control by introducing the regulation of driving. At the beginning, he suggest that without regulation of cars, there will be much more vehicle accidents. This is not a straight beginning related to the main point. However the first paragraph not only attracts the interests of the readers, but also relates to the following paragraphs which introduces the good effect of regulations of cars - “reducing the fatality rate by more than 95 percent.” The two paragraphs inform the writer’s opinion that regulations of the cars is important and necessary. Although Kristof didn’t mention a word about gun in first…

It concludes in the passage, “Issue Overview: Guns in America,” , paragraph 1 lines 1-3 it states “ Every time there is a mass shooting in the United States, people start arguing over the right to own guns. Americans own more guns than anybody else on Earth. Firearms are involved in the deaths of more than 30,000 people in the United States each year.” , It shows that in this part of the passage that there we a lot of mass shootings if everytime they had one the ones that heard are saw it always argued the fact that the president always let them have guns, but it is not their fault they are getting shot because they are allowed to have guns. It shows in the passage, “Famous Speeches: "We call BS," Emma Gonzalez's speech to gun advocates” , paragraph 2, lines 1-2, ”Every single person up here today, all these people should be home grieving. But instead, we are standing together because all our government and president can do is send thoughts and prayers.”, In paragraph 2 it shows how everyone was standing around and trying to listen to what the president had to say but all he could do was pray for citizens and he could not do anymore than just that and send good thoughts through some lives. In addition to this formal subject, one might have a different opinion…
