Gumball World
"Gumball World" by Hendrik Van Dorp IV

Milo and Kyra had been friends ever since they were brought into the amazing world of gumballs. They did everything together. They were even born at the same time. Not from the same mother, of course. That would be extremely painful and probably impossible. They went gumballing together, played gumball together, had gumball fights with each other, hosted gumball tea parties and invited their gumdolls, of course, and feasted on gumballs as much as possible. There was never a shortage of gumballs in their life. Gumball World was a marvelous and magical place. The sun was always shining, and there were never any clouds, except for an occassional spot or two. The grass was as green as green could be, and tasted of sugar and maple leaf tea. Sparkling ponds, full of water that was more pure than the color white, were scatterd throughout Gumball World, with many small creatures calling it home. The most magnificent part of Gumball World were the gumball trees. They towered over everything, with their tall, dark brown trunks covered in bark that could not be penetrated by the most powerful gumbullet. Although, there were no gumbullets because there was no need for violence or murder in Gumball World. The strong, dark trunks of the gumball trees sored into the skies and flowed into beautiful green leaves surrounded by more gumballs than any Gumballian could ever count. There were gumballs of every size and color. There were giant gumballs that the branches could barely hold, and there were miniature gumballs that you could fit into your nose. There were green apple gumballs, bitter lemon gumballs, blueberry gumballs, jazzberry gumballs, and any kind of gumballs anyone could ever imagine. One beautiful, sunny afternoon, Milo and Kyra were wondering through the gumball forrest, snacking on gumballs as they usually did. All of a sudden, an idea sprang up into Kyra's imaginative brain. "What would happen if

In a strange, unknown landscape such as a new culture, individuals long since used to old customs may face challenges in overcoming these differences and succeeding in society. In a new culture, people become dependent on those around them more fluent in the new society’s ways and lose their connection to the humans around them who seem too challenging to comprehend. The excerpt from the novel Monkey Bridge by Lan Cao exposes readers to this world through the eyes of a girl from Saigon who must help her mother orient herself to American life. In the excerpt, the girl describes the contrasts between her mother’s great shopping abilities in the open markets of Saigon and the complete bafflement caused by American supermarkets. In the excerpt…

American culture has learned to become sexist and misogyny with the influence of the sexual exploitation of women in the music, media, advertising and entertainment industries. A. Jeannette Walls, in her memoir The Glass Castle, demonstrates Erikson’s eight stages of development. Through the carefully recounted stories of her childhood and adolescence, we are able to trace her development from one stage to the next. While Walls struggles through some of the early developmental stages, she inevitably succeeds and has positive outcomes through adulthood. The memoir itself is not only the proof that she is successful and productive in middle adulthood, but the memoir may also have been part of her healing process. Writing is often a release and in writing her memoir and remembering her history, she may have been able to come to terms with her sad past. The memoir embodies both the proof that she has successfully graduated through Erickson’s stages of development while also being the reason that she is able to do so.…
