guernica

Period 1 English Honors

Guernica is a painting created by the famous painter Pablo Picasso. It is said by various art critics that it has an anti-war theme. Which it does.

When you first look at this different piece of artwork on war, all you can see is chaos, there is nothing positive within this painting on war. It’s a different piece of artwork on war, compared to the famous painting of Napoleon, or the original Uncle Sam posters throughout the U.S. Each detail within the painting has a negative view on war.

Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering upon Spains individuals, particularly on its innocent civilians. The discarding of color within this painting intensifies the somber, depressed tone in the painting. Also it expresses the pain and chaos in the painting. The horse in the middle of the painting could represent the people of Guernica instead of the actual people surrounding it. See how terrified it is, running away from something. Like innocent people running from destruction. The woman on the far left holding the dead baby represents loss. In war, lives are lost, from the soldiers fighting to stand up, to the civilians of that area.

The bull not only represents the Spanish culture, but also represents power, authority. Possibly the power of Spain fighting back, or standing up. The flaming buildings, crumbling walls not only express the pure destruction in Guernica, but the destructive power within war. The newspaper print within the painting, represents how people found out about the massacre, or even how people were begging for help. The light in the top of the painting could represent the sun lighting down on the chaos that is happening, showing the true nature of war itself. The broken sword shows defeat of innocent lives by their tormentors. The lady on the right, with the large leg, it represents how hard it was to escape from the chaos.

Therefore, the painting shows why people should be against

Peter Goldsworthy’s novel Maestro is substantially autobiographical. Through the development of the narrator Paul Crabbe from adolescence into maturity, Peter recalls aspects of his own experiences growing up in Darwin. Goldsworthy employs a musical style throughout the novel to engage the audience with visual imagery. The style features used to create characterisation and descriptive settings are all distinctively visual and help to shape the meaning of the text. Similarly Pablo Picasso used imagery to create meaning and shock viewers through his painting Guernica. The painting is Picasso’s protest against the massacre and suffering of innocent civilians during the bombing of the small town of Guernica by the Germans during the Spanish Civil War.…

Some objects in the painting are a pregnant woman, a burning candle, a skull, and a cross lying on the table under some books. The way the woman’s head is rested on her hand and she is staring into the candle light, shows that she is in deep thought. I believe that the woman is reflecting upon her life. She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

The meaning of the painting, as perceived, is the hindrance black people faced in entering the land of prosperity; the obstacle they faced was nothing other than White dominance. There is a White giant like figure in the middle of the painting with a sharp teethed wolf or monster underneath, creating a sense of evilness and scariness. They block the blacks from entering their dreams, in other words, a successful life. As a result, black people are sad and…

The painting that I am choosing to talk about is called Circling the Enemy by Z.S. Liang. What this painting means is that basically in the mid-nineteenth century, there were problems with the residents of Native Americans got more aggressive as many more settlers continued their expedition in the Westward Expansion. But, what I thought this meant at first when I saw this was how the Indians were fighting for their land because settlers were moving west and got to their land. What I think this picture represents or from what I see is that it has a pretty dark story behind it like it represents war or something that has to do with fighting. What I also see is that it uses more dark and neutrals colors as well. It has very fine details to where you can see the veins coming out of the Indians, the facial expressions on their faces, and the muscles on the horse’s legs from running.…

Yelim and Soyeon went to Metropolitan Museum and we found diverse art works which are related to our theme “War”. There were a lot of art works that are related to the war and they are all different. There were winners and losers that fight in the battle and also the weather can express the victory of the war. Most of the paintings' weather were cloudy and rainy, also with fires. The reason why, the battle was cruel and horrible. All paintings and sculptures are about the battle and the authors portraits the soldiers who are rest after the war, or fight during the war. Most of the paintings weathers were cloudy that express the war and expression of soldiers were not happy enough. The sculptures are made with bronze and bronze can convey more emotion about war than any metals such as gold and silver.…

The three camels represent the Holy Trinity, a pilgrimage to the Middle East. The number three is also a holy number, symbolic of the three great divisions of time -- the past, the present and the future. Each camel represents the stages of her arthritis -- one standing, one lying down and one dead. I see this as an obvious translation to France’s own life as well as her connection to god. One of the camels is sitting on a bible, which shows how when arthritis began to take control, Frances turned to the bible for answers and hope. I understand her use of biblical imagery, as when many people suffer greatly from illness or loss, they often turn to religion for answers. This also shows how Frances formed some of her ideas, as she shows more examples of Christianity in her artwork. The apple represents the sin in her life, being the forbidden fruit and situated near the hands in the painting. She pleads for forgiveness, as the apple represents her acknowledgement of her sins and she wishes to be cleansed. The ladders represent her journey towards spiritual enlightenment; her search for answers from a higher place to answer the tough moral questions arthritis has brought upon her. They are positioned across the cracks in the painting to represent her questions are about the decay she is faced with. I see this as an effective way for Frances to get her frustrations…

The phrase anti-war comes with many preconceived ideas and connotations. Depending on what an individual’s beliefs and philosophies are will determine whether this phrase is seen in a positive or negative light. Many poets use the artistic medium to convey their feelings and beliefs on the subject of war. In his poem “Next to of Course God America I” E..E. Cummings uses political satire to comment on ill-considered way in which politicians will send others off to fight and die in war (Cummings, 896). Brian Turner in his poem “Jundee Ameriki” is able to show part of the true cost of war, which leads the reader to a cost-reward analysis of war (Turner, 1013). Wilfred Owen with eloquent wordsmithing in his poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” is able to immerse the reader in the reality of war and remove the polish from the myth that…

I think this medieval art in a way relates to the story “A good man is hard to find” because in the book the family is going on vacation to Florida but the grandma doesn’t want to go there and tries to convince her son not to go there, during the trip it talks about how now a days we can’t trust no one “These days you don’t know who to trust…” and the grandma talks about how she can “remember the day you could go off and leave your screen door unlatched. Not no more.” The waitress also says “it isn’t a soul in this green world of God’s that you can trust…” and in the painting the general trusted this women who he just met and invited her to his party and it just got him killed. Towards the end of the book they have a car accident but they are fine and the car is messed up. They see a car driving slowly on the road and the grandma “waved both arms dramatically to attract their attention” so they can help them. But it turns out to be the Misfit, who escaped from the federal pen, and he ended up killing all of them. So in both stories they…

Good job on your project. I found your analysis to be quite deep and intriguing and love how you connected everything in the painting to showcase Washington's leadership qualities as well as his perseverance. I especially loved how you contrasted the right side and left side of the army.During that year, Washington was facing an array of criticism for his lack of leadership and inability to move the war forward. For me, I believe that the right side symbolizes the group of people that believed and had trust in Washington's abilities and did not wanted him to be replaced. The left side was a symbolic representation of those people who were critical of Washington's abilities and wanted him to be replaced. Despite this, Washington strong demeanor shows his perseverance and his passion to move forward despite the amount of criticism he was getting.…

At first glance “Guernica” looks like just a standard cubist painting but once you examine it a little further you see the point Picasso was trying to get across. The message Picasso stresses the most in “Guernica” is the damage of war. You can see this through the pain and agony on the face of the people and animals in the piece as well as the destruction all around. Besides this there are also two perceptions of hope. There is lost hope which is symbolized by the evil eye and the light of evil. The other hope is the conventional one this is shown through the light of good, dove in the background and, a lone flower that survived the…

In the painting Frida is the focal point. She uses bright colours such as orange and yellow on her outfit to make herself stand out; she wears traditional Mexican clothing, a long dress with white material underneath and has her hair loose to show the combination of American and Mexican culture in her life. Frida is at a low advantage point she is looking down and there is distant land in the foreground this shows the isolation Frida feels in her life. The painting is full of earthy tones, browns, pinks, greens, whites which complement one another to further express this connection with nature, such as the orange of her dress and the blue of the sky. All of these methods, composition, costume, and colour create a striking effect and draw your eyes to important details of the painting.…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
