La Virgen de Guadalupe has been a strong figure to the Mexican-American society. Therefore, her birthday is celebrated annually by the latino community. On December 12, festivals are held for La Virgen all over South America, Mexico, mainly throughout the southwest region of the U.S. This mainly includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. The southwestern region of the U.S is were the Mexican-American community is at its strongest. La Virgen de Guadalupe was first seen by Juan Diego , a Mexican Christian Indian on December 9, 1531. La Virgen de Guadalupe asked Juan Diego to ask the the bishop for a temple be made in the Virgin Mary's honor. Juan Diego's story was not heard, and he would have to go another day. la Virgen de Guadalupe apparated to Juan Diego a second time and she asked him a second time for a temple be built in her name. The second time, Juan Diego encountered the bishop and asked him if a temple be built for la Virgen de Guadalupe. The bishop did not believe this and told Juan Diego that he wanted a sign from la Virgen de Guadalupe in order to build the temple. Juan Diego's uncle had grown very ill and when looking for a priest to be at his uncle's side, the Virgen Mary would appear a third time. On this third encounter Juan Diego told la Virgen de Guadalupe that his uncle was extremely ill and that the bishop needed a sign from her in order to build the temple. la Virgen de Guadalupe would then tell Juan Diego that his uncle had grown back to full health and sent him to the top of a hill in order to cut fresh flowers as a sign for the bishop of her existence. Diego went to go see the bishop once again and Diego unfolded the tilma, and all the flowers fell and on the tilma was an image of the Virgen Mary. Now the bishop belived Juan Diego and ordered a temple be built on the mount of Tepeyac for la Virgen de Guadalupe. Las fiestas de la Virgen de Guadalupe is a beautiful festival that happens just
