Amanita phalloides, class of fungi of which death cap mushrooms belong, are considered to be one of the most deadly forms of mushroom poisoning from human consumption. The toxins, a-amanitins are hepatotoxic, meaning the toxins affect the liver, and is almost always fatal without extreme medical intervention.
The toxins of A. phalloides target RNA polymerase II by inhibiting its ability to produce new mRNA. Without mRNA translation cannot occur as the template used to synthesize new proteins would be absent, cell metabolism would not occur and would eventually result in cell death also known as necrosis.
After a short asymptomatic lag period, initial symptoms of death cap poisoning resemble nothing more than the common stomach virus. As the liver attempts to metabolize the toxins, signs and symptoms of acute liver failure develop as liver cells begin to die and cease to function causing the patient to become critically ill. According to the International Journal of Heapatology (2012), the mortality rate is approximately 90% and currently the only known treatment to prevent death is liver transplantation.

    The Death Cap Mushroom scientific name is the Amanita phallodes. When it is ingested, it causes a deadly reaction in the human body. The major toxin mechanism is the inhibition of RNA polymerase II in DNA reproduction. The reason this becomes deadly is that this is a vital enzyme in the synthesis of the messenger RNA and without it, protein synthesis cannot happen and new cell production ceases.     The role of an enzyme is to catalyze a chemical reaction. Usually an enzyme increases the rate of speed of a reaction. Enzymes break down molecules in our body faster than they would normally break down without enzymes. Enzymes work at specific temperatures and pH levels. (Wolfe, 2000). For example, a stomach enzyme works better in a more acidic environment, whereas intestinal enzymes work better in a more alkaline environment. The shape of an enzyme is important to its function. Enzymes function like a lock and key. The substrate binds to the active site of the enzyme like a key into a lock. The enzyme breaks the bonds of the substrate and releases it without being consumed in the process. Substrates can also function as inhibitors, competing for the active site. (Wolfe, 2000). Sometimes one enzyme will work on one particular substrate, in other circumstances, such as with fructose, two or more enzymes work to break down a substrate so that it can be used by the body. Fructose is first broken down into fructose 1 phosphate by the enzyme fructokinase. Then fructose 1 phosphate is further broken down into dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde by the enzyme aldolase b. (Hudon-Miller, 2012). At this point, DHAP and glyceraldehyde enter the glycolysis cycle where they can be further processed into ATP, the body’s main source of energy.…

Ingesting ricin is much less lethal, requiring on the order of 30 to 40 mg per kilogram. By ingestion, the pathology of ricin is largely restricted to the gastrointestinal tract where it may cause mucosal injuries; with appropriate treatment, most patients will make a fully recovery. Because the symptoms are caused by failure to make the protein, they emerge only after a variable delay from a few hours to a full day after exposure.
