grow up!
Grow Up!
Have you ever had a single moment when you think, “ Everything’s different now. I’m grown up.”? Most people grow up too soon and they become “boring”. Some people grow up later in life . They have a hard time being serious. Others grow up at a gradual pace. These people are more mature than their peers but still enjoy whatever life throws at them. They go with it and don’t try to force growth (thus they would become “boring”). I feel as if I’m part of the last group. I can be serious but I still like to have fun. That is what I believe being mature really is.
You hear and see people being cruel or doing something stupid. Learning not to be cruel or stupid is all part of growing up. But even growing up can be hard. I walk down the hall at school or I am in class, and I hear about people doing drugs or bullying. I think to myself, “ I will not get caught of in the ways of popularity and cliques and just go along with it. I will stay true to myself.” I know most people think hanging out with your family is “Uncool”, but the truth is, that families help you stay true to yourself. They help you keep and obtain good morals and habits. I know my family has helped be grow and become the “real” me.
I have had many experience were I can actually see that I am “grown up”. One such situation was when I was at girl scout camp. The girl scout camp we were at was a horse camp and we were in the advanced group. There were multiple girls and adults with myself and my friend, G. A storm was coming in and G , myself, and our group (Pixies) had all hiked up to the stables. As we got up to the stables, we Pixies all got our gear on and headed over to the counselors. We all received the name and gear of the horse we were supposed to ride. As the girls went to saddle up the became louder and louder. They were trying to talk over one another. Now G and I knew, since a storm was coming in, the horses were going to be jittery. We decided to help each other tack up. As we passed

My first reason why family is important to my life is because they have always been there for me. Many of my peers succeed at certain sports or even various classes like English or Calculus. Although, I did struggle with my other activities and curriculum classes, family has always been there. Throughout middle school and high school, I competed with my friend for captain of the soccer team. I didn’t beat him until eighth grade when my hard work finally paid off. Because of this, I now realize how dedication and persistence can help someone achieve one’s goals. If I never decided to join the soccer team and compete for first captain, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to challenge myself and gain the skills and characteristics that would benefit me throughout the rest of my life, if it had not been for my family pushing me to excel.…

I was only six at the time and had not yet learned how to properly treat and deal with adults. I was taught by Disney sitcoms and from my friends that family is the strongest bond in the world and that you should be able to show who you truly are to them. I was thereby confused because as a young child as I was always eccentric and loud and in my opinion I was just being myself which ,according to what I learned from television, is how you are supposed to be around your family . My sister, however, helped to clear that up very fast by giving me one of most life advice that has subconsciously affected me to this day. “Justin, you have to grow up. There are two sides of every person: one they show their family and one they act around their friends.” This was one of the first ways my family had truly impacted me and shaped me into the person I am today, by splitting me into two distinct people. Around my family I became an awkward, quiet kid who never spoke up and obeyed every word he was told while around my friends I was who I really am; an eccentric, fearless adventurer who is always seeking new thrills and excitements. According to my sister I could not show the true side of me to my parents because to them that is disrespectful and my parents would…

Starting from infancy, parents influence the foods their children eat, the neighborhoods in which they grow up and the schools they attend. Growing up with a supportive family builds relationships that lead to guidance in identity development. They teach you morals, traits and teach you how to be yourself. On the other hand, as kids we learn how to belong to certain groups in our childhood. Where we start going to kindergartens meeting new friends and other children, moving onto primary school and then high school. Being around different people allows people to get along with one another and learn of each other. These places are where people are able to socialize and be apart of friendship groups. Belonging to a group allows others to feel a sense of belonging and it’s a good way to feed of each other and take in others thoughts that may help you to define yourself a little more due to the exposure of others…

The faint, almost invisible, line between child and adult, carefree and responsible, becomes more and more blurry and grey the closer you get to it. First, it is said that you reach adulthood and step into the real world, when you confirm your faith in God, but thrusting that threshold yourself, you just know you are not yet an adult. So then, you postpone it until the age of 18. By then you should be starting your career, or at least have an idea of where you are going, and more importantly you are now legally an adult, with the right to vote and take care of others, but also with the hard realities of facing up to your mistakes. Coming to terms with who you are as you grow up and as an adult is not always the easiest thing. The short story “Owl” by Jackie Kay treats exactly this subject, of whom you end out to be, and what things you choose to hold on to in life.…
