Group Buying Industry Overview

Before we can group buy via Internet, tuangou was developed in China a few years ago. Tuangou means the same thing as group buying or collective buying. Tuangou allows people to invite other people and to buy the same merchandise at the same in large amounts. Therefore buyers will benefit from reduced price and sellers will benefit by selling multiple quantities at once. Unlike modern group buy, there is a minimum quantity or dollar amount for a specific item in tuangou. Otherwise there will be no price discount or seller will not sell their products to you. Individuals typically don’t need multiples of one item at one time. So in order to participate in tuangou, people started to invite others who have the same need for the exact item. These people can be your family, friend, or even totally strangers. Groups are often organized informally on BBS site or can be organized via specific tuangou site. Instead buying vouchers online, people who participate in tuangou will actually bargain and negotiate with wholesalers or even manufacturers face-­‐to-­‐face

Nowadays, most of the group buying in Europe and North America is done

    In September 2011, Groupon dramatically changed the way it reported revenue. Prior to this date, Groupon recorded revenue acting as a principal, not an agent. Recording revenue in this manner means that Groupon was recording a “cost of goods sold” entry with each “revenue” entry on every sale it made. These entries heavily inflated the amount of revenue Groupon was reporting. Although net income was not affected by this, many other things were such as revenue growth rates and gross profit margins (Hilton, 2013). Herein lies the problem, Groupon is an agent, not a principal. To be considered a principal, a few criteria must be met. These criteria include, “the company is primarily responsible for providing the product or service to the customer”, “the company owns inventory prior to a customer ordering it and after a customer returns it”, and “the company has discretion in setting prices and identifying suppliers” (Spiceland, Sepe, and Nelson 2013). The nature of Groupon’s business violates these aforementioned criteria. They do not carry any inventory or inventory risk on the coupons they sell for discounts. Also, they do not hold the primary responsibility for providing the product or service they are selling the discount for.     A cornerstone for facilitators is to understand what happens to people in groups. To do this, we need to look both at what people set out to achieve, the task, as well as how they get along – the processes of group activity. People often behave quite differently in groups and teams from one-to-one settings. Some people become quiet, others turn into bullies or tormentors, some become jokers. For the facilitator who has to rely on others for getting the job done, this can be daunting. Why is it that a meeting feels electric one moment and awkward the next? Why do some people refuse to communicate while others do all the talking? It becomes easier to understand the process level if we take a practical example. Imagine that you are in a team meeting and two people start arguing. Do you feel embarrassed? Do you try and stop it? Do you join in? When people work together in groups all sorts of things go on – allegiances are made, cliques are formed, feelings are acknowledged or overlooked, reactions are triggered – and this all makes up the group dynamic or process. If we try to pretend it doesn’t happen, doesn’t matter or doesn’t belong in the workplace we are fooling ourselves. Such behaviour is the lifeblood of the group or team and the facilitator who develops an understanding of such activity is in the best position to help the team overcome any difficulties. As facilitators, it is useful to have a theoretical map to navigate through this minefield of group behaviour. A useful model here is that provided by Will Schutz who used three simple words to sum up what takes place in team or group dynamics at a deep level – inclusion, control and openness (see model overleaf). This section and the following two sections explore these issues in more detail and give ideas for interventions that will help facilitate the group process in the arenas of inclusion, control and openness.
