Executive Summary

When we were asked to choose a topic to do something in Goa so that we could give back to the society, enthusiastically, we picked up Give to Receive. The basic idea was to be able to help those who actually need it by seeking support from those who have excess. We started approaching various organizations with our idea and tried aligning our objectives with theirs.
With the way the things panned out for us, and knowing that another group was working with the children at First Point, we chose to collect donations for the children there. With the credibility of the organization in place, there was no doubt that the help would reach the needy. Hence, we began or efforts in that direction.
Alongside, through the help of one of our group member’s father, we got introduced to Spandan. This organization was dedicated to the case of helping mentally challenged students, who primarily were slow learners. These students cannot match the pace of things done in their respective schools and thus needed hand holding to be able to be completely independent. On interacting with the founder at Sapndan, Ms. Marita Adams, we realized the kind of efforts and dedication that she has put in the organization. She highlighted two of her major concerns for Spandan and we offered to help her, to the best extent possible. Those concerns include:
Designing a curriculum for Maths for these students since the dropout rate for this subject was increasing.
Arranging funding for the organization since it would get difficult for her to sustain the initiative in a matter of a year.

Background

Spandan is a registered charitable trust NGO based in Goa. It was founded in 2007 by Dr. Marita Adams. The NGO aims to spread the message of “Learning for All”. It promotes the education for vulnerable section of the society

However, despite the latest and greatest trends to boost student achievement, the very same students in the United States continue to underperform on a global scale in Mathematics. In 2012, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) bore out results that “29 nations and jurisdictions outperformed the United States by a statistically significant margin,” (Heiten, 2013). In order for our students to rise to a position high on the performance scale of nations, students must master the basics in all subjects, but more specifically in the area of Mathematics.…

Majority of students lack understanding of mathematical language and show weakness in basic numerical computation. The students make frequent errors because they misread operation signs when adding or subtracting integers or carry numbers incorrectly when multiplying whole number and decimals. Furthermore, these students have difficulty understanding written or verbal directions or explanations, and find word problems especially difficult to translate.…

Many of the students enrolled in our independent study charter school come from a low socioeconomic background and are academic underperformers, especially in mathematics. Most students lack the time and resources to be able to attend school multiple days a week or to spend extra time working with their teachers to improve their lagging mathematics scores. At the same time, many teachers are asked to deliver classroom instruction on mathematics topics that they likely have no specific training or credential in. In addition, these teachers often only have a very limited amount of time to work with each individual student before they must move onto the next. These obstacles make it more difficult for these students to complete the required course load.…

The learners in this component are 7th grade math students. There are 27 students between the ages of 12 and 13. Fifteen of the students are performing on grade level, as measured by i-Ready diagnostic testing. The remaining students are performing one or more grade levels below. I provide in-class support to this class. I am assigned to this class because of the diverse needs of the students. Five of the students have learning disabilities in math and/or reading, but are performing high enough not to require Inclusion support from a certified Special Education teacher. Two other students are on Multi-Tiered Support System plans, because of their learning gaps. My goal is to fill those gaps, increase their confidence, and help them grow academically.…

Children International was founded in the year of 1936, back then it was known as the Holy Land Christian Mission. The said organization provides outreach to widows and orphans in the place. Through time, they've noticed that the situation is getting harder to solve. In that case, Children International extended their arms even to other poor countries. When the year 1980 came, they started to launch their efforts in India, Guatemala and the Philippines. They have come up with programs that will build deeper and lasting connection between one needed child and one compassionate sponsor. Later that year, more than 2300 children were benefiting from the sponsorship.…
