The Truth about “Our Secret”

Susan Griffin’s main focus in her essay “Our Secret“ is on Heinrich Himmler’s life. She hopes to better understand how people come to be who they are as a product of childhood and adolescent experiences. Through this process she hopes her readers can become conscious to the truths of their upbringing and not only find their true identity, but have the strength and courage to change their destiny. Griffin is ultimately interested in finding her own identity but has been oppressed by her grandmother to not search inwardly. She therefore uses Himmler as a mask by examining what experiences shaped him as a child to understand what may have molded her. Griffin concentrates on connections between people, childhood, and objects to Heinrich Himmler’s life to better understand social and personal identity, and oppression. Although Griffin writes an excellent account on the connections and metaphors that define Himmler, she leaves the reader feeling lost and unfulfilled by her lack of connection to her own personal search for identity.
By focusing on Heinrich Himmler’s oppressed childhood Griffin can more easily avoid the realities of her own. Griffin touches on her own oppression when she says “When at the age of six I went to live with her, my grandmother worked to reshape me. I learned what she thought was correct grammar. The manners she had studied in books of etiquette were passed on to me, not by casual example but through anxious memorization and drill” (307). Through this quote Griffin is proposing a connection between Himmler’s father, Gebhard’s, oppressive behavior and her grandmother’s. Griffin hopes to show a connection to modern day upbringing, that although it is not as off the wall as Dr. Schreber’s child rearing method, it is still extremely oppressive and unnecessary.     It is obvious throughout the book that Funder empathizes with the victims she interviewed. With Funder being brought up in a Democratic western country, the thought of losing her freedom and privacy due to the large amount of spies and harsh laws, left her no choice other then to sympathise her victims. Funder characterizes these victims as ordinary civilians, who are entitled “enemy’s of the state” by the Stasi, despite not committing any large offense.     At first, it was hard for Heinrich to publicly admit to the other men that their actions are unjustifiable, one major event changed all of this. In Warsaw Poland, Heinrich is present at one of the Jewish round ups, “The utter image disgusted me, there was a woman with her children, encircled by the fierce helmets of their German occupier” (180).     There is a glorious ambiguity to Cynthia Ozick’s The Messiah of Stockholm, one that naturally encourages a variety of interpretations and understandings. It’s a text that at once is about religion, literature, the Holocaust, identity, and more – something worthy of a comprehensive overhaul and a critical eye. Cynthia Ozick uses Lars’ psychological shifts and precarious mental state to speak to a variety of elements; but she does this in a way that renders the oscillations Lars’ experiences into the surrounding environment. This sort of externalization of Lars’ psychology is integral to the novel, and it is through this externalization that Ozick makes her various points regarding the aforementioned topics in the post-Holocaust world; Lars’ struggle for identity, then, is the medium through which Ozick speaks. If we examine the externalized factors within the novel, and read the hidden language Ozick seeks to embed within the dialogue and narration, we can reach an understanding of the novel that clears up all ambiguities: that Ozick is not arguing for any particular subject so much as she is arguing for a passionate negation of everything that detracts from historical reality. Ozick, like Lars, seeks to hoist something up to the stage of the world; but it is not literature, nor is it religion – it is the Holocaust.…

    Authors often use characters within their novels to show the consequences of challenging cultural boundaries and, in turn, display their own personal concerns. It is not uncommon for characters to reflect an author’s ideology regarding social groups in their contemporary time periods. It is clear that this is certainly the case with the 1975 novel The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum, (also referred to as How Violence Develops and Where it Can Lead), written by the German Author, Heinrich Boll. The Lost Honour is, on the surface, an attack on yellow journalism and the damage it causes to the lives of the people reported on. However, with a more in depth analysis of the novel we are able to see that Boll is in fact using his characters to reflect his own personal views on the stereotypical social groups in contemporary Germany. Boll himself has described The Lost Honour as “a pamphlet disguised as a novel”. Through the use of the seemingly ‘objective’ third person limited narrator, we are shown the consequences of challenging and conforming to the expected gender requirements. On one hand we are presented with Katharina Blum, a woman who rejects the majority of expected stereotypically feminine traits that are place upon women and the resulting slander upon her name in doing so. In contrast however, Boll also demonstrates the consequences of abusing power, which is stemmed from being a male, through the character of Totges, an example of a yellow journalist. It is Totges’ own assumptions of Blum and his vulgarly masculine ways which ultimately leads to his murder. It is important to remember that these narrative developments reflect Bolls own personal views formed from his own context. There are many significant occurrences in Bolls life, such as his time in Hitler’s army, which would suggest that he despises the inequality of power among all German citizens as is reflected by the contrast between Blum and Totges.
