Grenouille Quotes
EJ Ndubuisi
Dr Epstein
IB Lit Patrick Suskind influences Grenouille’s mood and character through other characters and concepts to demonstrate that there is no escape from society. Because the setting of the novel takes place in 18th century France, social class influences the population and most upper class do not care about lower class or how they feel. Grenouille’s opinion appears not to matter, because of his low class so this may be the reason for Grenouilles introverted state and craving for seclusion from society. Suskind promotes Grenouille as a heartless, almost animalistic creature, incapable of relating to others. Grenouille lacks a spiritual belief system guiding his ethical decisions, or in his case, lack of ethical decisions,

Grenouille appears completely different than everybody else, and sees himself as so too. His natural olfactory ability combined with hunger for world domination and forced discipleship separate him from the others, but commonalities appear through actions and dialogue of other characters. What others do resemble actions Grenouille either does, or hopes to do. Suskind writes “he was planning soon to found an international lodge that stood above all social rank(157)”. This quote about Taillade Espinasse, uncovers a hidden similarity between Grenouille and himself. Within reading Perfume, Grenouille’s goals are made apparent and mirror those of Espinasse. Grenouille’s character is expressed through a line describing Espinasse, but also Grenouille at the same time. Grenouille’s character is seen again in another line, this time by Madame Gaillard. The novel states “ she [does] not grieve over those who [die], nor rejoice over those that [come] to her(19)”. The narrator's description of Gaillard parallel Grenouilles character, sparking a connection where there seemed like there wasn't any. In both instances, evidence through speech about a certain character, as opposed to dialogue spoken by the character, provides a useful connection to Grenouille, pulling him out of his isolated state, and returning him to

In the book “Legend” by Marie Lu, I would like to have Day be my best friend out of all of the characters. Day has been nothing but caring throughout the whole book to Tess and other characters such as June and his little brother Eden, which is a characteristic that I really admire about Day. An illustration as to where Day was caring to Tess was when he met Tess for the first time. Day was on the streets by himself when he saw her in an alleyway. He called out to her and she ran away from him. Day could tell that Tess was really scared so him stayed put. He did not want to scare Tess, he only wanted to help her. ‘“Stop crying, I’m not going to hurt you.’ I knelt down beside her” (Lu 85). This quote shows Day trying to take…

“I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” What does this quote from Sherman Alexie's “Superman and Me” mean? First, the quote should be broken down into fragments. “I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold.” In this part of the quote Alexie is talking about the “...sullen and already defeated Indian kids who sit in the back rows and ignore me with theatrical precision.” He is telling about how he tries over and over to teach them, but they don’t want to learn. They have shut him out and locked their metaphorical doors.…

“Was God hiding from us during the killing? It used to be that God and I shared many drinks together as friends. We don’t talk much anymore, but I would like to think that we can one day reconcile over an urwagwa and he will explain everything to me” (Rusesabagina 184). Throughout the novel, Paul Rusesabagina is faced with a never-ending avalanche of struggles that would smother a weaker man. However, he maintains a façade of resilience despite his tribulations and fears, doing so through his eloquence and mastery of the art of conniving. The aforementioned quote brings home the impact such a horrific experience brought upon him, while highlighting his innate tendency toward open communication. This tendency was his greatest assest throughout the genocide, which he exemplified when he said “Today I…

“In 1860, when I ran from the plantation in Virginia, I decided to be twelve years old. COuld’ve been anywhere from nine to fourteen, but as Frederick Douglass, that great man, said, you might as well ask a horse how old he is as a slave” (Stolz 3). This quote was said by Cezanne Pinto, the main character of the historical novel, Cezanne Pinto, about a young slave living on a plantation in Virginia with high hopes of freedom and an education. Originally born Deucy Clayburn, Cezanne spent his time as a slave working in the stables due to his gift with horses. The story is told from the point of view of an approximately ninety-year-old Cezanne, reflecting on his journeys with the cook, Tamar, to escape slavery. Although he faces many hardships of discrimination, he never let it get in the way of his dreams. In the end, the old man rests in peace with the satisfaction of living a…

In art museums, there are ageless paintings and sculptures. On the radio, classical music and classic rock is still played. These are some of today's ways of carrying on the past through art forms. The painter and the rock legend are artists immortalized through their works. The artists in Grendel are the Shaper and the court harper. Their singing of great men's deeds, no matter how inflated or even untrue, turns men and their deeds immortal. Single artists come and go, but those with a true talent will remain everlasting and will inspire others. As Grendel, the unwelcoming monster, stays stubbornly committed to nihilism, the Shaper shows…

Quique Aviles essay is the story of his battle with addiction and how writing and performing help with it. As I read this essay one quote stuck out to me "I am a poet and an actor. I am also a crack addict and an alcoholic, and that is how people see me: a pipe head, a drunk, an epidemic, a disaster area", this quote ties into a part later on about zero tolerance with both of those parts of the essay it makes me think he believes no matter what he does he can not escape the label of addict, but even with that he still knows he needs to…

One of Debussy’s quotes that really caught my attention said, “Music is the space between the notes.” –Claude Debussy. There is a lot more to music than that and I have learned that from researching Debussy and being in this class has helped me also.…

Meursault’s reactions are rarely what the reader envisions as appropriate. People feel disconnected-- disheartened and confused-- when Meursault claims his Maman’s death “doesn’t mean anything” (3). The level of indifference he feels and the actions he performs: making excuses to his boss, having lunch at Celeste’s, going to swim and a movie with Marie, all have the readers questioning Meursault’s character. This displeased feeling continues through the first half of the novel with Meursault’s uncaring and robotic behaviors of watching “families out for a walk… the local boys [going] by… the shopkeepers and the cats” (21-22). One then starts to wonder. One…
