Managing a Global Team: Greg James at Sun Microsystems, Inc. (A)
Greg James, a global manager at Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun), slumped on the edge of his bed in the company’s corporate flat in Paris. He struggled to even move after only three hours of sleep.
James had embarked on this unexpected trip from Sun’s Santa Clara, California, headquarters six days earlier. With only a few hours’ notice, he had set out to meet with his entire 45-member customer implementation team spread across India, France, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United States (US). He had already met with his team members in the US, India, and the UAE. France was his final stop before heading home. For the second time, the team had failed to respond promptly to a customer system outage as required by a service contract agreement. James had begun this trip assuming he would find a swift resolution to the rapidly escalating customer situation that had motivated it. Unfortunately, that had not been the case.
James knew that if he could just make it to the gym, exercise would invigorate him and clear his head: “Five more minutes and then I’ll go.” Twenty minutes later, still in his room, he grabbed his laptop and launched his e-mail.
Re: HS Holdings
James scanned his inbox, reliving the events that had plunged him into this predicament. Six days earlier, he had received a string of e-mails, forwarded to him by his team. Rahul Ashok, service manager for the Mumbai team, was in touch with Praveen Devilal (one of Ashok’s team members in Mumbai) and Nick Elliott and Robert Chan in Santa Clara to trace the source of the breakdown:

Later that year, on February 19th, while laying sandbags along the broken camps, James heard a low droning noise. The gusty wind began blowing around the camp site and sharp screams and yells split the air, cries for attention and warning. “It’s the Japs! The Japs!” People shouted loudly. Chaos soon followed, spurring everyone into a wild frenzy. Noise engulfed the camp as 39 (James’ eyesight was near perfect) planes dropped their explosive cargo before drastically nose diving into the Earth, ripping up grass and land every which way. Previous cares and thoughts abandoned, James made a sprint for the trenches with his mates, hearing the tremendous ‘Boom! Boom! Boom!’ following them as more bombs were unleashed. Once encased in the safety of the trenches, a look back confirmed the loss of the police office and the wharf, as well as the men and women who resided there. The buildings were blackened by soot and ash, flames burning to the skyline. James knew that that ash also contained the remains of his fellow countrymen and women. With no time to mourn the losses, bullets skidded in the trees right over their heads like a wild dust storm. He imagined the faces of the pilots shooting the bullets, streaming down like a…

    James Rachels

James Rachels argues against theories of selfishness that the psychological egoists maintain. He challenges the view that everyone always does what he or she wants by showing that we often dounpleasant tasks for the future pleasures or from obligation. Altruism is recognized as not acting in self interest. He also clears up the confusions that selfishness and self interest share the same meaning. *Psychological egoists argue that we always do what we want to do. Rachel says that is questionable and there are two classes of actions that are exceptions to the generalization. One is a set of actions we do not want to do but we do as a means toan end we want to achieve. For example, going to the dentist to fix a toothache or going to work everyday to get paid at the end of the month. The other set of actions are those which we do, not because we want to or because there is an end to achieve but because we feel obligation to do them. Rachel states for example, someone may do something because he or she has promised to do it and thus feels obligated, even though he or she does not want to do it. The second statement psychological egoists argue is that, to do what one wants to do is acting selfishly, therefore we always act selfishly. Rachels states this example, Smith wants to do something that will help his friend even if it means putting on hold his own enjoyments, and Rachel says that is what makes Smith unselfish. Rachel says the mere fact that I am acting on my wants does not mean I am acting selfishly; that depends on what it is that I want. If I want only my own good, and care nothing for others, then I am selfish; but if I also want to help other people, and if I act on that desire, then m y actions are not selfish.*The psychological egoism stance can ask then why Smith gets satisfaction from helping hisfriend and the answer is because he is selfish. But actually if we have a positive attitude towards reaching a goal, we get satisfaction from reaching the goal.…
