Our Company was founded upon the core values of being ethical to the farmer community, adhering to organic farming and maintaining sustainable methods to nurture the environment. “My ultimate goal is to bring pride to the grower, and an identity to the farmer”
Muthu Chellaram, founder of Greenfield Bio Plantations, identified a begging void in the upcountry farmer community, and ventured to step in to make a difference. Himself a member of generations of tea farmers, initially brought by the colonists to Sri Lanka as estate workers from India, Muthu’s mission was to operate a farmer owned Company that is both socially and environmentally ethical.
His son, Durka Chellaram, having grown up in tea gardens, and drawn by an irrevocable sense of nostalgia right back to it, also joined this venture as a personal odyssey to transform their first tea estate in Haputale into a sustainable, organic endeavour.
Soon the founders’ mission was to nurture the land, its people, and its wildlife.

Consequently, our farming landscapes are not the dreamy, verdant carpets of crops popularly seen on postcards, but a ‘zero carbon footprint’ forest garden juxtaposed against large boulders. Tall forest trees protrude, providing shade and ensuring moist fertile soil. Our soil is constantly fed with organic compost. Interestingly, our forests also pander to the endemic Sri Lankan leopard.
The Forest Garden Concept is a system of farming that is modeled on natural woodlands. As opposed to hewing down forests to create farm lands, Greenfield Bio Plantations grows various crops in 7 canopy layer as in the forest to mimic the natural eco system. This system guarantees biodiversity by allowing a large number of plants to coexist. The system is adaptive and resilient towards changing conditions; this simply means the varying weather conditions nurture a range of different plant species according to the changing seasons. Forest gardening also enhances the quality of the soil; deep rooted plants extract nutrients from the heart of the earth and make them available to shallow rooted plants.
