Green Revolution
Although the Green Revolution originally described developments for rice and wheat, high-yielding varieties HYVs have since been developed for other major food crops important to developing countries, including Sorghum, Millet, Maize, Cassava and beans. Moreover, a fully fledged system of international agricultural research centres now works on many aspects of developing country agriculture (the future harvest centres that make up the consultative group on international agricultural research.)

Impacts on agricultural production * The adoption of HYVs occurred quickly, by 1970 about 20% of the wheat area and 30% of the rice area in developing countries where planted to HYVs * By 1990 the share had increased to about 70% for both crops * Yields of rice and wheat virtually doubled * Higher yields and profitably also lead farmers to increase the variety of rice and wheat that they grew at the expense of other crops * With faster growing varieties and irrigation they grew more crops in their land each year – these changes more than doubled cereal production in Asia between 1970 and1995 * While population increased by 60% instead of widespread famine cereal and calorie availability per person increased by nearly 30% and rice and wheat became cheaper * Latin America experienced significant gain as well but the impact in sub-Saharan Africa was much more modest – poor infrastructure, high transport costs, limited investment in irrigation and pricing and marketing policies that penalised farmers made the Green Revolution technologies too expensive or inappropriate for much of Africa
Social Impacts * The Green Revolution led to sizable increases in returns to land and hence raised the farmers incomes with greater income to spend needs for farm inputs and milling and marketing services, farm families led a general increase in demand for goods and services this stimulated the rural non farm economy which in turn grew and generated

    The Green Revolution originated after an urgent need to promote food security with a growing trend in global population, as a way to promote self-sustainability and independence. As it is clear in the report given by the Food and Agriculture Organization (DOC 2), in the period ranging from around 1929 (great depression) and 1945 (end of World War II) the global food supply index was below the world population. What this means is that there was literally not enough food being produced world wide to feed the world population. This struggle of human kind to stay afloat in supplying the minimum needs for survival meant that a change needed to occur.     In Mexico and India the rise in wheat yields began after the advancements from the revolution (Doc.1). Also, as the food supply grew, the world population was steadily rising because less people were suffering from starvation (Doc.2). The authors of these documents are emphasizing the increases of these variables in their data, because their jobs for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations are to report the success of the revolution, to say that it was a success in their part (Doc.1&2). Also, in other places around the world such as India and Mexico they considered the revolution a success story. The farmers of Punjab, India dove right into the opportunity to use the new technologies that the revolution offered and everyone competed to find a better use for them (Doc.5). The food and agricultural minister for India makes the point that the farmers were eager to use the revolutionary technology because, his job is to make sure that his enterprise was successful. In Mexico, the agriculture made the farmers, some more than others, very wealthy (Doc.6). The new technology and crops that were available made it possible to have a bigger crop, without as much intensive care that would have been needed before the revolution. A document that had accounted for the accomplishment of India’s and Mexico’s agriculture would have been useful to see if there was in fact real fulfillment from the Green Revolution and it could help us understand whether or not the crops helped, because some type of crop record could show which crops thrived, which crops failed, and how the genetically altered crops effected the ones prior to the…

    The technological advances that specified with agricultural innovations helped food production grow and helped farmers produce more and make a bigger profit. The Wheat Yields of India and Mexico grew almost 4 times as much since about 1950 when the Green Revolution really progressed (doc 1). The technology that helped breed crops led farmers to produce more of specific crops which caused more crops that were needed to sell. This actually helped out the world tremendously.
