Greed in Artemis Fowl
Greed in Artemis Fowl

Artemis Fowl, the first book in the series of eight science fiction and fantasy novels, is written by Eoin Colfer. It is about a 12-year-old criminal, Artemis Fowl II, and his plan to restore his family’s fortune. In Artemis Fowl, Colfer uses Artemis Fowl II, the protagonist, and two minor characters, Mulch Diggums and Briar Cudgeon, to demonstrate the theme that greedy people will do anything to get what they want.

This shows us that his freed has blinded him into doing bad things like kidnapping an innocent fairy as hostage, without thinking about how Holly might feel. Greed has forced Artemis into kidnapping Holly, just to restore his family’s wealth.

Another way them has developed is shown through Mulch Diggums, an infamous burglar in the Lower Elements. Mulch risks his life in return for a cut of his sentence in jail. To get Holly back, Commander Root asks Mulch for a favor: to rescue Captain Holly Short from the Fowl Manor. “‘Not my way of life. Fairy prison, human prison. All the same to me.’ The commander thought about it. ‘Ok, you slime. Fifty years off your sentence.’” (126) Mulch is reluctant at first but as a convict, he really was to be free, and accepts this offer. This might not be a clear example of greed but it is a consequence of Mulch’s greed for valuable items. Greed has forced Mulch Diggums to risk his

His social skills are somewhat under par, but his vocabulary and intelligence is what he drives himself on. His growth and development throughout the series is quite believable as he develops in stages, not straight from villain to good guy. In this story he is not solely responsible for the conflict, the C-cube, but he is not completely innocent either……
