My Role Model; My Mother
Sometimes we come across a strong, influential person who leaves a powerful impact in our lives. Luckily for me, I came across such a person from the very beginning of the journey of my life. My mother who taught me to walk my first steps, who danced and sang to me crazily just to see me smile, the one who has always been there for me as my support whenever I needed one, is my role model and has made an unforgettable impact in my life. Her perseverance gives me an inspiration to work hard and get the most out of my life. It gives me a goal to make her proud of her daughter the same way her daughter’s proud of her. Although my mother’s life story has influenced me positively, it isn’t the only way my mother has affected me. She has always been that I can be. Even through the troubled and awkward first year in the United States, she was the person who I looked up to as a role model, she took every obstacle thrown at her with determination and patience.
Coming from a background of financial hardships, she grew up always wearing a smile and looking at the positives not focusing on the negatives. My mother grew up in Nigeria. In a small one room apartment, patched up with woods for the walls and rusted iron sheets for the rooftop. The only one out of all her siblings to attend high school. My mum achieved something no one in her family could. She achieved this only by her persevere and positive outlook of life. She studied countless hours by a small lantern or a little stream of light escaping her neighbor’s house. She helped take care of her younger siblings, and even worked at the family store where she and her siblings picked, preserved and soled nuts. Even at 18 I shied away from my peers and mostly kept to myself. I found myself hiding with my right next to me trying to explain to me that I was going to face the world anyway so it was better starting now. So I struggled to learn

My Mom is my role model. I guess this is due to the fact that I used to scarcely see my Dad because he comes home really late; he still does, though not as late, while my Mother took care of me ever since she quit the job as the General Manager when I was in 2nd grade. She is the one who is there for me whenever I have a problem, like a robot on standby, but she is also a harsh whip with her discipline though she never hit me. My most notable memory of my Mom is when I sucked at math in 3rd grade. I don't know how to do a problem so naturally, I asked her. However, after she taught the same problem 4 times, I still didn't get it. I was afraid she would get mad, but she didn't and in the end when I finally got it, I asked her why she is so patient. She simply replied "practice makes perfect", an old…

My name is Lucinda Wilson; I am a 26 year old single mother raising three beautiful children. Their names are Kaleel Wilson (8), Samiya Wilson (6), and Xavier Wilson (5); they are the loves of my life. If I had to identify someone who made a significant influence in my life, it would be my mother, Ms. Vernell Scott Wilson. My mother has had twelve children and I am the eighth child. When I was young I watched my mother struggle to take care of all her kids. If that left her without, and she made sure that her children were secured. On September 22, 1989, we had a terrible tragedy happen to our family. On that day in which was twenty-three years ago we lost our father in one of the most horrible storms to hit Lee County; Hurricane Hugo. My father went to our mobile home to get my brothers, after that was done he went back for a reason we never knew. He was electrocuted and he passed on that night. At the time my mom was in the hospital about to give birth to one of my youngest sisters. During that time I was only three years old, so I didn’t understand it then, but even now to this day all I know is that my father is gone. My mother has been a strong woman because she had to deal with that, and not only that, she had eleven kids left to raise alone. My mother never gave up on us, no matter how bad, destructive, and hard headed we were. My mother has a major influence in my life in so many ways. From things she went through in life, I’ve learned to never give up, trust in God, and be good at whatever it is that you put your mind to do. She taught me to don’t settle for the less, but always do your best. From her being a mother that has raised twelve kids alone she showed me that I can do it with three. There were so many times when I told my mom that I wanted to give up. She would look at me and say, “I didn’t give up on you”, that was enough for me to keep pushing and saying I can do this. There is this one scripture in the bible that sticks with me…

Sometimes I tell her to just stop working and just focus on school, but she knows that her kids are so important to her that she is willing to give up some hours of sleep to give others happiness. If everyone is willing to sacrifice something to give others around us happiness, it would give many people opportunities they’ll never encounter. Being open-minded, makes my mom unique because giving an ear to hear about what others have to say can always lead to great friendships. My mom has always been a hero to me.She has done so much for me ever since I was born and mostly ever since she went back to school. She always tells me that she is going back for my siblings and I. To show us that she, a mother of four and as a person who wasn’t born here in the United States, can accomplish anything if she can put her mind set to then she can and is still willing to give up her time to care and nourish her family as much as she can. Learning all these advice from my mom, I want to pass these on to friends, family, and people around…

My father, a pharmaceutical representative, taught me to work hard at everything I do which has benefitted me throughout my academic career. If I ever hit a blockade and wanted to give up, he would always say, “You have to finish what you started.” During freshman year, I took Pre-AP Geometry which was a challenging course to me, and after my first test I thought I wasn’t going to pass the class. However, instead of giving up in the class and dropping out to an easier class, I worked harder and studied more. At the end of the year, I passed the class with an A. This work ethic has allowed me to succeed more than fail in life. My mother, a realtor, infused in me values and a curiosity of life. To refuse the easier explanation, and search for a deeper understanding. As a child, my parents constantly taught us lessons such as never leave dishes in the sink and always make your bed before you leave the house. These small lessons have impacted me and shaped me to be a responsible…

My mom has two sisters that are tremendously active in our lives. My house became research central as the entire family researched hospitals, doctors, cancer, and homeopathic remedies. We did everything and anything to help with the fight against cancer. This experience, although difficult, set an example for me and put into reality what I had been taught and lectured most of my life. I come from an immigrant family on both sides, my mother’s family immigrated from Ecuador and my dad’s from Ireland. For as long as I can remember my Abuelito, my Ecuadorian grandfather, always lectured his grandchildren on working hard, never giving up, and always having a positive attitude. When cancer hit our family, I found myself living the principles they taught us. We researched and continued to be positive. We worked hard helping each other and taking more responsibility. The attitude amongst us was to do everything in our power to have the most positive outcome. My mom had moments of weakness, but her attitude and outlook were always positive. This helped me mirror her and allowed me to step up and contribute to my family. I am a stronger, better…

Now that I am an adult I see just how brave my mom really was. I didn’t always believe that my mom was courageous. When I was young, I resented her for many years for the things that I had to endure as a child. I couldn’t understand why certain decisions concerning us were made. I remember saying to myself when I become a mother I will be different, my children will have options, our life will be better. However, in a time when marriage was supposed to last forever, my mom with only a 10th grade education ended up raising her children mostly singlehandedly. My sisters and brother would often describe how my father’s drinking affected their lives when they were young. I was too young to remember those times but I was told how mom would get up early…

In Jamaica Kincaid’s story “Girl” we are given a dialogue of a mother and her daughter. The dialogue consists of the mother giving her daughter instructions on how she is to behave and carry herself. She wants her daughter to become a lady, not a slut, and learn to be a good housewife for her future husband. The mother instructs her daughter on how she is to walk, talk, and sing at church on Sundays the proper way. She does this in order to prevent her daughter from being judged wrongly in the future. The mother is concerned about her daughter learning these things because in her culture the women’s role is that of a housewife. Young girls are not only taught the duties of a housewife, they are also taught to carry themselves as ladies this way they won’t be judged as grown women.…

My mother’s loving, caring, thoughtful, gentle, and persistent nature has shaped me as the person I am today. Though I can only hope to have her thoughtful personality one day, I am still thankful for her love and guidance. She is a constant example for me throughout my life. I have watched her as she struggles to take care of our family through the bitter and sweet. She has showed me persistent love towards my brothers, fathers, and other family members. Even when she was diagnosed with cancerous tumors, that made her weak and nauseous, she was able to show the characteristics of a leader who brought our family together. I seriously cannot comprehend the tremendous amount of time and strength she has to support a family of five as a full-time housewife. She is always telling us to get ready for class, school, and always keeping us prepared. She required a tremendous amount of strength to keep normality in our life yet battling her chronic disease.…

    My Father, My Role Model

At first, I thought Atticus was just a feeble, old man. He never took part in anything interesting; he didn't play poker, stayed in an office, and didn't go hunting or fishing like all the other men in town. He was never too tired to play keep-away, but when I asked if we could play tackle, he'd tell me: “I'm too old for that, son. ” Whenever there was a football competition, he always told me he was too old for that too. All the other fathers went to it an' all my father ever did was wear his glasses and read. I was embarrassed by him. Though, my whole opinion changed since the incident with the mad dog and the court hearing with Tom Robinson. I was flabbergasted! Miss Maudie said back in Atticus' time, he was the deadest shot in town. They called him one-shot Finch and I couldn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. I saw him differently then. I was most eager to brag about it too. But it wasn't just the way he handled the gun that impressed me, it was also 'cause of his modesty. I could tell Scout hadn't realised it, but Atticus never said a word about his marksmanship. I liked that part of him. I also liked his defence for Mr Robinson. Everyone had been against him for defending a coloured person, but Atticus held his head high. He provided an awful good argument too. I appreciated Atticus' efforts and grew to respect him. He had taught me that true courage wasn't a man behind a gun, but it's when you keep on fighting even if you know you'd lose. I wished I could be more like my father. Then I could become a lawyer too. I figured I wouldn't care if he couldn't do a single blessed thing. Atticus is a gentlemen, just like me!…
