Greatness: Differences Between Ender And Colonel Graff
Greatness, being one of the most desired, and the most respected traits by humanity throughout history. For countless generations humanity struggles trying to find change, trying to produce someone who can make that change which has been sought after for so long, someone who is great. While genetics may be what often makes a person a genius, greatness is created with the addition of experience, a very particular type of experience unique to the individual that changes them into the best possible version of themselves. Ender proves his greatness by defeating the vastly superior enemy of earth, and he is able to through his experience with battle school’s unforgiving environment and Graff’s harsh training that is specific to Ender. Accordingly, Graff is always manipulating Ender into being separate others, and his doing so almost always exposes the higher qualities Ender posses. The two fights mentioned earlier did not merely happen by accident, they were intentionally composed for the very purpose of bringing out Ender’s best. Not only did Graff manipulate Ender into fighting Stillson and Bonzo, but he also lengthened the divide between Ender and his classmates by pointing him out as superior to all of his peers during the trip to Battle School from Earth. However, despite him being initially an outcast, Ender proves his ability to attain loyalty by gradually gaining the friendship, trust and respect of those around him through clever means. Once more Graff isolates Ender, but by separating him from his peers, rather Graff forces him into new situations that he alone must explore where he must lead Dragon Army through battles that no other commander has ever experienced, where the odds are against him and almost no one but himself can help him. Through Graff’s training methods of separation as previously described, Ender’s brightest qualities were …show more content…

Together with his companions Ender was not improved, rather it was Ender alone whose grand strategy defeated the buggers, his team was an extension of his will, being merely fine tool with which he destroyed the

The sunlight, levels of gravity and the curve of the ground was unfamiliar to Ender; given time he fell to love Earth for the short time he spent there, post-Battle School. Shortly after his return, he goes to Command School on Eros, that the Bugger’s had built prior to the overthrow. The ceilings are extremely low, passages are narrow, the floor slopes downward, and the lower gravity is discomforting. After his success, he leaves for the first human colony on a former bugger world, which becomes: Ender’s World. The war between the buggers and humanity has ended, yet Ender has lost all happiness. Throughout the novel, the Battle School tested Ender through a series of games. Whether the games be face-to-face or through a computer, these games have had meaning. The games have impacted Ender’s entire life. A continual theme throughout Card's novel is that games do not exist in opposition to reality. The author shows that every action has a meaning. Even when the action has been manipulated, changed, or not understood, it still has a meaning to it. In all of the games that Ender played, each one was unfair or misunderstood. In these circumstances, Ender must think about the big picture and not the small details. On top of that, Ender tends to hurt his…

However these gifted children are being used for unjust things like war and battling. Children within this age group should remain innocent and lives without feeling constant fear of the consequences of war and battle. Ominous music and dark lighting is used in almost every scene of Enders game, symbolic of the grief that the children have to experience daily at battle school. Ender in particular, throughout the entirety of the film is in constant state of fear and often faced with having to make decisions about the most excruciating of circumstances. In the second scene in Enders game we see a low angle shot of his face before his monitor is removed in conjunction with strong facial expressions of fear and anguish. His emotion are used by the producers to foreshadow what comes next, we hear screams and he is clearly in agonizing pain, raising the issue of how unethical this treatment is. Colonel Graff has no empathy or care towards children like Ender; his only focus is on the results of what these brainwashed children do for…

For example, Ender had a plan that would make Bernard, one of this launchy classmates, look like an idiot and abate his power over all the launchies, “Bernard’s attempt to be ruler of the room was now broken-only a few stayed with him now… Bernard was contained, and all the boys who had some quality were free of him. Best of all, Ender had done it without sending him to the hospital” (Card 52). To put it another way, Ender had moderately fractured Bernard’s power with the rest of the launchy group without physically hurting him. Therefore Ender helped the rest of the boys who could be someone important and improve their futures since he cared about them and how Bernard treated them. Additionally, In the battle room, the older boys were teasing Ender and his friends for trying to master difficult skills, but got mad when Shen, one of Ender’s friend, did it to them. Due to that, the older boys broke into the battle room to try and hurt them, “‘Stay there!’ He shouted at his friends, who obviously were forming up to come and rescue him… Ender grasped the shoulders of the third boy’s shirt and pulled him up sharply, butting him in the face with his helmet” (Card 115). This reveals that Ender's friends wanted to go and help him, but Ender didn't want their help and handled the situation. As a result of Ender's actions, he thought of his friends and how he didn't want them getting…
