T.C. Boyle: Greasy Lake * -------------------------------------------------

* -------------------------------------------------

* -------------------------------------------------
In “Greasy Lake”, by T.C. Boyle, he tells us of the transformation of boys to men because of the boys rebellious nature and their temptations. Being in a secluded area, they lose control of their id. The boys let their id take over their ego’s which unleashed their primal instincts. When they realize their adolescent actions, they become frightened, and go back to constructive society. Boyle uses the boys as a symbol of a false image. * -------------------------------------------------

* -------------------------------------------------
The boys think highly of themselves being the toughest boys around. The narrator was in the company of two dangerous characters, Digby and Jeff. Boyle’s statement “Digby wore a gold star in his right ear” shows us a rebellious young man but then states “and allowed his father to pay his tuition at Cornell” shows us he isn’t as bad as he thinks he is. Jeff is thinking of quitting school to become a painter/musician/head shop proprietor. “ In short, they were bad”. * -------------------------------------------------

With the absence of adults, the 19 year old boys sought a night of adventure. “We went up to the lake because everyone went there, because we wanted to snuff the rich scent of possibility on the breeze, watch a girl take off her clothes and plunge into the festering murk, drink

    Coming of age signifies a growth in a person 's identity. It is the time when adolescents experience a pivotal moment that will shape their character and lead to a realization of who they really are. The three stories that illustrate both concepts are Greasy Lake by T. Coraghessan, Where Are You Going Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates and A & P by John Updike. A & P is about a coming of age for Sammy. Though it takes place over the period of a few hours, it represents a much larger process of maturation. Greasy lake is about three young men on the road to maturity,…

    The “Greasy Lake” was told in a first-person narrator that was left unnamed. The author choice to write about the character who was talking about their rebellious faze of their life. From this point of view you can tell as if the character is telling someone of their teenage years and all they dumb things they did in order to be cool. For example, “We wore torn-up leather jackets, slouched around with toothpicks in our mouths, sniffed glue and ether and what somebody claimed was cocaine.” (306) this shows how they wanted to give off the look of being a bad boy but wanted to seem to be cool with their friends. Reading the story as if it was coming from the characters own mouth, made the tale more real instead of the possibility that it was made…

It is not common that bad guys are very interested in furthering their education nor is it normal that bad guy’s parent pays for the things they have no interest in. Also, the narrator tries to sell you on the fact the characters have excellent social skills, can dance well, and drive cars very fast while rolling joints identifiers of bad-natured people. They thought that bad was good of course in that time it was the cool thing to do, they went cruising around the strip sixty seven times trying to look like bad boys. Then all of a sudden Digby (one of the narrator’s friends) fought for the wheel because he saw his friend’s car at greasy lake so they thought to play a prank on him they flashed their lights and honk the horn to look like the police. But they didn’t see their friend tom when they got close to the car they saw a dead body in the water they then screamed and ran for their lives in that mucky water while they were running in terror a lady screamed out and pointed to them and said “Its them they tried to raped me”(Greasy lake 134) and a greasy fellow came up to them and said “I’m going to kill you”(134) so they try to run which isn’t manly at all they don’t get to far eventually the greasy man catches up to them and starts beating them up. The boys take on the stronger man because it’s like a right of passage like when the Indians would go hunting with their sons they would leave as boys and come back men. Well if all three of them can some how beat this man up they will be manly and no one would mess with them, they try to punch him and kick him but it seemed like nothing would work some one even tried some karate moves on him but he just got slammed on the ground and the greasy man started to kick him. As a result of their successful effort in escaping their emotionally wounding relationship with their parents, they assert their new found independence and transformation into men by swearing a pledge which is voiced over by a highly saturated overview shot of the all three boys jumping into the lake, symbolic of their happiness and freedom. The pledge reads “We do swear to never speak of this enterprise to any adult under pain or friendship lost...from this day forward we will build our own house, eat our own food and be our own men.” The high modality and repetition mirrors Hurley’s motto “near enough is not good enough”, as such language techniques are used to emphasis passion to the objective, renewing the perceptions of the now acclaimed men through the process of self-discovery. Thus, it becomes evident that self-discoveries have the power to change an individuals perception of themselves, and their attitude towards life mimicked by both composers in their respected…

    The culture they are raised in New Yorks, Hell's Kitchen in the 1960's. Hells Kitchen is an ethnically mixed, working class neighborhood that the boys describe as a “place of innocence ruled by corruption”. It is it's own culture of street rules and operations. Children are safe to play and be children; however, the people that run the neighborhood are often criminals. The people running Hell's Kitchen have their own sense of street justice, and own means of carrying out sanctions against those that dare encroach upon or deviate from it. For example, there was a drug dealer that moved in on the neighborhood. The drugs that he dealt resulted in the overdose and death of a Puerto Rican butcher's son. That drug dealer was found hanging from a street light as a message that drug dealers would not be tolerated in Hell's Kitchen.…

    During my time at Raquette Lake, not only did I learn from other people but also learned things about myself. I will admit, at first, hearing about Raquette Lake did not sound very appealing to me. I wasn't looking forward to "roughing it" out in the woods with a bunch of people I hardly knew, especially on a Friday and Saturday. Once we got there my whole perspective quickly changed and I found myself forgetting about what I thought I'd be missing back at Cortland and just enjoying the beautiful scenery that was surrounding me.…

    Salt Marsh Essay

    Salt marshes play vital roles in coastal areas, such as Westhampton, Southampton, Hampton Bays, and many other locations. Let’s look at the global effects of salt marshes. A study from September of this year published in UVAToday shows that the carbon stored in salt marshes may help in slowing global climate change. Carbon dioxide is the predominant so-called “greenhouse gas” that acts as sort of an atmospheric blanket, trapping the Earth’s heat. Over time, an abundance of carbon dioxide can change the global climate, according to generally accepted scientific theory. A warmer climate melts polar ice, causing sea levels to rise. Salt marshes, made up primarily of grasses, are important coastal ecosystems, helping to protect shorelines from storms and providing habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, from birds to mammals, shell- and finfishes and mollusks. They also build up coastal elevations by trapping sediment during floods, and produce new soil from roots and decaying organic matter. Salt marshes store enormous quantities of carbon, essential to plant productivity, by, in essence, breathing in the atmospheric carbon and then using it to grow, flourish and increase the height of the soil. Even as the grasses die, the carbon remains trapped in the sediment.…

    Personality is a fiction built up as a 'fake entity' by human beings because they identify themselves with their senses and their emotions and their mind. Out of this identification and the experience of daily encounter with reality a 'personality' gets their feeling of existence. It is totally subjective because it is based on concepts and an artificial self image that let the individual react caused by ones limited and stored concepts to what ever shows up. These reactions and what has caused them is mostly not conscious and the individual is living them as part of their existence, turning around oneself and finding the reason for being hurt or feeling happy at the outside, but not being capable to see that all reactions are caused by ones own concepts and programmed self image.…

    The opening scenes introduce us to the type of expectations and restrictions that are placed on the boys by various authority figures and groups. The opening four of the boys walk into the formal opening assembly holding the banners of “honour, tradition, discipline, excellence” which show what Welton Academy believes is important. These banners, as well as, the buildings, teachers and school uniform all illustrate the fact that Welton is a very conservative school where everyone is expected to conform to the school’s ideology. We are also first introduced to the very high expectations that the school has of the boys. This is evident when the Principal says to Neil Perry, “we expect great things from you this year,” and he says to Todd, “you have some big shoes to fill young man, your brother was one of our finest.” I believe these two statements imply that there is very little leniency at Welton for people who do not work hard. In contrast, when the boys are not around authority, they are shown completely undermining the schools ideas by smoking and renaming the banners “horror, travesty, decadence, excrement.” This shows me that these harsh expectations and restrictions do not make much difference to the boys’ personality, it just means that to do things that they want, they have to go behind the…
