Dr Yunus seems to have given more emphasis on social business than microcredit. The deposit of the poor was diverted to social business and his Yunus Centre is working through out the world to promote social business. The noble laureate did not possibly divert GB fund to other institutions with ulterior motive but these transactions apparently went beyond the jurisdiction and declared vision and mission of the Grameen Bank, writes M S Siddiqui.

The decision of the government to inquire into the affairs of Dr Muhammad Yunus, Grameen Bank and its affiliated companies has been criticised by the Nobel laureate. They state three reasons for the fresh investigation-Nobel Prize, jealousy and politics. They say the initiatives are purported to 'destroying' Grameen Bank.

The admirers of Yunus at home and abroad, including heads of some developed countries have expressed their concern with the allegations against Grameen Bank and Dr Yunus. Let us now analyse some of the activities of Grameen Bank and Dr Yunus.

Grameen Bank has 8.4 million mostly women borrowers and holds US$1.5 billion in villagers' savings and employs 22,000 people. It is working for alleviation of poverty not only in Bangladesh but also in many parts of the world.

Grameen Bank (GB) is a Statutory Public Authority established under the Grameen Bank Ordinance of 1983 for extending micro-credit to the poor. It has developed into a colossal socio-economic organisation and plays a significant role in the economy of our country.
