Graduation Speech: Wel-Come To, Jam-Boe !
“Wel-come to, Jam-boree, I want to wel-come you, Jam-boree…” On and on it goes, our intonation dancing around almost as wildly as we are. With the sun oppressively beating down on us, sweat running down our backs in gushing rivers, and starting “Joe Avery” for the umpteenth time, we couldn’t be happier (okay, we could probably go without playing Joe Avery again, but still). Gazing around at the sea of strangers surrounding me, I know that I could not be in better company. To think that a myriad of musicians assembled haphazardly from across the nation would form such a fine group.
Our daily routine consists of practicing for a few hours and marching to who-knows-where in some forsaken corner of camp, only to trudge back again in an hour or

Congratulations on being five classes away from graduating! I have about another one to two years left, and I am more than ready to be finished. I do not really have a favorite pro-sports team, but I am a huge fan of the Texas Longhorns. I hope you achieve your goals and have a wonderful winter semester as…

I haven’t stopped running since May of 2013, and truth be told, I’m getting kind of tired of it. Not of the sweat, the fact that my legs are constantly sore, the nuisance of cycling all of my workout clothes through the wash every week, or even the fact that I still look like the skinniest guy in the gym. No, I’m getting tired of all the other baggage that’s come with it.…

Leaping into our high school marching band’s “rebuilding season” with a dozen other novice classmates, I approached with a hesitant enthusiasm. Though I instantly gained a great passion for marching and competing, my inexperience, when combined with the similar inexperience of my peers, would lead to last place finishes at nearly every tournament. However, the failure of this unit did not cause me to become discouraged or resigned, but rather led me to take ownership for areas I needed to personally correct and improve upon, to recommit and develop diligence for pursuits I truly valued, and to seek to help strengthen and build up every other individual member. Especially for a marching unit, every member counts, and no one may be left behind,…

Marching band is analogous to a machine. All of the components must properly function in order to complete a certain task. Therefore, each member should possess dedication in order to produce a triumphant show and capture the audience’s attention. If one member fails, the whole organization collapses. Through these experiences, I learned that determination and dedication contributes to a successful lifestyle. Otherwise, dreams could never exist.…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. All in all he was almost exact the same person as I am he likes basketball, he helps others, and he does well in school.…

Last year, our game was strong; the band obtained a rating of two at state finals in Brunswick, Ohio. It was marching season, not football season. With eight incredibly talented seniors on various instruments, our season was substantial and awe-inspiring. Those seniors took charge and impelled us to victory. Also, the music was an upper level composition wrote for experienced hands and mouths. The Shenandoah Marching Band only had four Jr. High members in its midsts: Cameron Kolbank, Lorrin Wiley, Corey Feldner, and Deanna Mick. Although, after losing so many seniors last marching season, the band has been forced to call upon eight Jr. High band members to engage at the high school level in the marching program. This year with the new additions,…

With a wide spread of my arms and a clench of my fist, the last notes of Panic! at the Disco's song, "Victorious" came to an end. As I called the band to attention and to march off the football field, I knew the marching season for the Mead High School Marching Band was coming to an end after another year. I remember feeling jittery and excited despite the fact that I was composed before our eight minute marching show began. I hopped off of my podium, used my shaky hands to disassemble the platform, and exited the field to catch up with the band. Our performance at the St Vrain School District Band Night marked the end to my high school marching band career that started just four years prior.…

As I walked through the school’s doors the summer before tenth grade into the blazing sun, I wondered if the choice I had made would be worthwhile. I wondered if I was going to fit in and be accepted. I instantly realized those few moments of worrying where a pointless waste of time as the Marching Band welcomed me as the newest member of the color guard. Over time, I was taught drop spins, a multitude of tosses, jazz running, as well as spinning rifles, but little did I know I was learning so much more than the physical. The mental and moral example of hard work, coordination, and acceptance of others was impressed upon me. Marching band has equipped me with lessons and values that will stay with me for a lifetime.…

Imagine… you are getting all dressed up for that big day. You get anxious and scared because it’s the graduation for eighth grade. You get all dressed up and put on your gown and cap. Then you arrive at the school. You sit in the assigned seat and watch the children before you get up and shake hands. You feel your hands get clammy as you wait. You wait till you hear your name and realize that it’s your time to shine. You stand up and hear the creaking of the harwood on your shoes. Then you feel your hands and wipe them down, but when you get up there you shine like a supernova. Everyone's eyes are on you. You realize that it’s your time to show who you are and time to reflect on your legacy here. A legacy is what you leave behind for people…

As I make my way through the large crowd to get to my seat, I could hear the sounds of the goatskin drums and whistles blowing. The well-toned brass section chimes in, and it is almost melodious, as the melodies and tunes all mesh together perfectly.…
