Graduation Day
If I had to describe my graduation experience, there are many words that would come to mind such as unforgettable, special, memorable, eventful etc. Graduation day was an experience within itself, but the preceding and succeeding weeks made it even more worthwhile. While sitting with my class and listening to the crowd cheer, my anxiety grew. Things became surreal after hearing my name being called to receive my diploma. When I received my diploma, I realized I was walking into a new life. In that moment I acknowledged every obstacle that I encountered along the way as a building block and let go of it all. I was no longer a child, I had officially entered adulthood. Graduation day was the peak between the preceding and succeeding weeks. The school year past me like a thief in the night, but the three preceding weeks before graduation went by slow. I appreciated the pace because it gave me a chance to cherish my last moments with my high school class. With each passing day, our anticipation continued to grow. Graduation, summer trips, and college plans became the subject of every conversation amongst my senior class. I remember being called to the school’s auditorium for a mandatory meeting about graduation supplies. After receiving word about my pick up date, I was ecstatic.
It had seemed like yesterday I began my freshman year at Scotlandville Magnet High School being the typical freshman by looking for classes, reuniting with old friends, and asking for assistance adapting to SMHS policies and procedures. Finally, the last day for seniors came. I woke up that morning and said “This is my last day as a senior in high school.” I was beyond excited. At noon, all of the seniors rushed to the atrium to cherish their last moments as high school students. Everyone was so excited that it was nearly impossible for us to leave. After saying our goodbyes for what took almost an hour, everyone took their first step of separation. On the way home that afternoon, the feeling of no longer being a high school student began to settle in. It was the end of one chapter, and the beginning of another. On Friday, May 4, 2013, I woke up full of emotion. Graduation day had finally come. Although there was only a week long gap between my last day of high school and my graduation day, it had seemed like forever. The seniors were scheduled to arrive at the F.G. Clark Activity center at 8:00 a.m. for graduation practice to practice our entrance and exit procedures and receive further details on the event of graduation. Due to the levels of anticipation, busy schedules, emotions that were amongst my senior class etc. it took longer than expected to complete graduation practice. An hour before graduation, I sent out a 3 page text to my closest friends about everything we had been through until now, our future together, and wished them good luck with their endeavors. At the end of everyone’s text, I said “After I walk onto the other side of the stage, I hope that you join me in my life after high school.”
After hearing my name being called to receive my diploma, things became surreal. When I walked out to join my family, I had officially walked into a new life. In that moment, I had realized that life passes by faster than we think. One day we will all be on our own, thinking to ourselves "man, I miss the good old days". Of course this is a natural part of life we all have to face, and when one door closes, another one opens. I guess sometimes you just really need to appreciate what you have when you have the chance, and I'm really glad that I did.

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

Do you remember the day of your high school graduation? When everyone stood outside in their caps and gowns, and the proud feeling filling in the air. Whenever I see that photo I’m reminded of the emotions I felt: happy, proud, and relaxed.…

During my freshman year of high school, I didn’t even know what the Student Government was. I had no idea that, three years later I would be elected as the first one year SGA President (this means I was only in SGA for one year before becoming president, previous presidents have had two years of experience). I started off high school lost and afraid of the world in front of me. Like many students, I struggled to keep myself together mentally and physically. I didn’t really know what I liked or what really interested me. It wasn’t until my junior year that I found something that I connected with. I’ve always been in love with my school and its spirit. Every year I would go all out for spirit week, and I was that one kid that stood out from everyone…

A bunch of my family members was at my graduation. They were very excited for me and cheering very loud because I was about to get my high school diploma. When I got to the gym, everybody was getting ready to walk to the football field. I was thinking that I had finally succeeded and reached the day I had been waiting on since ninth grade. I was happy that I finally reached my goal to graduate on the night that ended high school life and started my college life. Everyone was always asking me what I wanted to do in college after graduation, but I was not sure because I like to cook different things. It is always fun to try…

Bursting through the front doors of the school I stride out into the summer sun. The last day of school is cloudless and the sun shines brightly, warming my face and long chestnut hair blowing in the slight summer breeze. The breeze is chilly and the weather isn’t quite hot enough to feel like a real summer but that’s Seattle for you. Turning my new IPod to one of my favorite songs I start toward home, excited. For this is not just any last day of school, this is the last day of my junior year of high school. I am now officially, a senior. I had been dreaming about this summer for so long and I am determined to make it the best one of my life. I start sprinting home grinning till it hurts with Rabbit’s song “It’s Love” blaring…

    El Salvador Narrative

Coming from there, I found my world had been shattered and I had to start from scratch. I found that everything I knew had now been split into three. My life at home was rigorous and hard. My mother’s expectations of me were harsh but I thank her because without her regulations, my life at school would have been different. Maybe without her given structure of my life early on, I wouldn't have risen to become valedictorian of my school. Even though I did all the work and put in all the hours on my own free will, her expectations and my fear of letting them down motivated me when I felt like I reach “good enough”. Thanks to that, I found that life at school was relatively smooth and I was able to do well. I found that hard work can bring good fortunes so it’s always worth it to put in the time. At long last, I found that doing well at school, I was able to keep and create healthy relationships with people my age. I made friends and was no longer the lonely kid in the corner. I had people I could act the way I wanted to be. The realization that all my three worlds are interconnected is no surprise. I mean, they all came from the same place that I came from. From the violent towns of El Salvador. From my past. But enough about the past. My high school life is coming to an end. This upcoming Saturday, I graduate and life will again be changing. I will no longer have to live in that white blue house. I will have to say goodbye to Arrowhead. I will have to make new friends. College is coming and while I am completely excited for it, I do feel sorrow for leaving them. But it’s not really leaving them because nothing is forever. Unlike like my college memoir class, this is not the end. This is just the start of a new phase in my…

The last time I remember something as huge as starting in high school was having to move to Oregon from Alaska, but for better or for worse, here I am, attempting to make my mark on this big blue Earth. However, Highschool was never always just peaches, cream, rainbows and unicorns. If I’m to be one hundred percent honest here, I was legitimately terrified of it, whether it be the totally reasonable fear of being stuffed into a locker by a bully or getting lost in a labyrinth of corridors and passages of infinite classes and broom closets. But those fears never truly emerged up until the final days of freedom that remained from my graduation of 8th grade. As the days drew nearer, so did my fear reaching the brim of a breakdown. I was scared,…

Growing up we all looked forward to starting high school, but how many of us enjoyed every bit of it? High school was a moment that I looked forward to; thoughts of doing what I finally wanted to flood my mind. In June 2008, I received my GSAT result and was delighted when I saw that I passed for the William Knibb Memorial High School; although a bit disappointed because it wasn’t on my top five list. High school was not everything that I expected. In a few days, I met a few nice people. The first week of school was amazing, but after a few weeks things started getting intense. High school; however, was no bed of roses, especially when it came onto the subjects, reports, and school rules.…

It was the last month of July, a couple of weeks before my middle school years ended. I was very anxious because of the idea of leaving my school where I was comfortable with everyone, where my circle of friends were what I looked most forward to when coming to school every day. The day I was going to graduate came closer and closer, I hated how the time was ticking by so fast when I didn’t want it to. I had spent the last 2 years with the same class and teacher, my class mates were like brothers of mine. After all, it was the last time I was going to see my friends Raghav and Karanbir. Weeks flew by as fast as the wings of a humming bird; it was only a few days before the big day, graduation day. As expected the day had arrived, on my way to the banquet hall I felt my head filling up with bizarre scenarios of how it would be like in high school with new teachers, older people and new faces from different school. When I got out of the car I made my way through the main foyer, the banquet hall was decorated so distinctively, I felt as if I were a boy down the hall way of the Queen’s castle ready to be awarded as a Knight. As names were being called to step forward towards the stage, I heard the principal call out “Shreelesh Kaliraj” and I got up with great pride and walked cautiously bit by bit towards her. When she handed me the certificate I was as proud as a father who had just seen his child walk for the very first time. The certificate was 8x10 inches made from stiff hard paper; it had my name written in clear bold letters in the middle of the certificate with a shiny elegant sticker right beside. I quickly walked back to my seat knowing this was the last time I was going to see my close friends, at first I was feeling down due to the fact after this day we would all go separate ways to shape our future but I couldn’t let that thought ruin the entire day for me because at the end I knew meeting new people and making new friends was part of…

If life is full of journeys, high school is one of the journeys that experienced and completed by all of us. High school life is a memorable time for most people, for me as well. Different from America’s education system, Malaysia is more similar to British’s educational system as Malaysia was colonized by the United Kingdom during late 20th century. Malaysia has primary school for which student study from six until twelve years old while secondary school is for thirteen until eighteen years old. As we do not have four seasons, our school starts from January and ends at November. My high school, Pay Fong High School, is one of the secondary school that consists of three years junior classes and three years senior classes.…
