Governance and Accountability
Accountability in Leadership
SGT Jeremiah Hendry

Accountability is the cornerstone of an effective organization. It begins with the individual, whether a soldier, a civilian, employee, manager, supervisor, CEO, or General Officer. I want to first look at the definition of accountability, its impact on leadership in all walks of life, both civilian and military, and finally, how to implement effective accountability in a organization.
Let's first look at the meaning of the word accountability both in its root definition, and current usage . The DoD defines it as “The obligation imposed by laws or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping.”
But on closer look, a simple dictionary defines it as “ According to the Collins World English Dictionary Responsibility is: “1. the state or position of being responsible 2. a person or thing for which one is responsible 3. the ability or authority to act or decide on one's own, without supervision.”
Traditionally, leaders and other command elites have not seen themselves accountable as individuals. They were either above the law, as sovereign -- rex non potest peccare ("the King can do no wrong") -- or they had immunity just because they were leaders (immunity rationae materiae). Alternatively, they were considered mere representatives of a state or organization which, it was believed, carried the responsibility for any wrongdoings. Writing in 1915, historian R. Michels was not optimistic about change: "Historical evolution mocks all the preventive measures that have been adopted for the prevention of oligarchy. If laws are passed to control the dominion

What is accountability by definition: (Department Of Defense) The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is very important because it allows for your chain of command to know where you are at at the moment. Accountability in the workplace is defined as doing the right thing consistently, day in and day out, in tasks, relationship interactions to fulfill or further the mission of the organization. Accountability in business is very important as it costs US corporations billions in inefficiency, employee theft, and return of defective products.Accountability is also important because it tells the unit commanders how many personnel are available to perform certain tasks. If a leader does not know how many troops are available then he or she will not know who is available to do what and when. Gear and equipment is also to be accounted for to have the "readiness" numbers and to make sure that the enemy is not getting a hold of your gear. This essay I am going to write is about the importance of accountability in the army, and as to how it affects the unit’s mission. First off by definition "Accountability is important in the military because soldiers are often times required to perform extremely challenging duties and services. Without accountability, a soldier cannot be expected to meet these high demands and expectations". Being accountable means being in the right place at the right time, being in the proper duty uniform, being dependable and always arriving to work on time, appointments on time and most importantly doing the right thing at the right time and all the time. One of the most important parts about being accountable is so that you do not miss any important information that you could use. The first formation of the day is one of the most important formations of the day because that is where all information is put out for the week, day, and even month. Being accountable also means that everyone knows where you are at all times, not just you taking care of you but everyone you work with being able to get in contact with you at all times of the day just in case they need too. The last formation is also just as important due to the fact the information that was put out at first formation can change and if you are not there for the change in information, you could show up at the wrong place or in the wrong uniform. So it is always important that you are either there or if you cannot make it there or to any of your appointments and other personal area, you need to make sure that you contact your supervisor. Unless you cannot get ahold of them then you need to contact someone to let them know of anytime that you’re not able to make an appointment or are going to be late somewhere. Accountability does not only affect you, it also affects every single person that you come into contact…

The Merriam dictionary defines “accountability as an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions”. (Almazan) Throughout military history, accountability has been a key component that encapsulates every aspect of one's duty and obligation. Fulfilling one's duty and obligation requires the individual to be responsible for their actions. Therefore, failing to be accountable means failing your duty and obligation not only to yourself but to the military as well. Since many nations rely on their militaries to serve and protect the country's well-being, it is understandable why so much emphasis is placed on accountability in the military. When emphasis is not placed on accountability, serious consequences can…

What is accountability? An obligation imposed by law, lawful order, or regulation of an officer or other person of authority for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds is the best answer I can think of. Now the person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of an item they are accountable for, sensitive item. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping. What does accountability mean to the Army? Accountability is a very important part of an enlisted soldier’s job. An enlisted soldier is responsible for a lot of items issued to him/her whether it’s a weapon, night vision goggles, clothing that belongs to CIF, a vehicle, or from a leader’s aspect another person.
