GOV 312L Exam 2 Review
Review Sheet, Second Midterm Exam, GOV 312L: U.S. Foreign Policy

LECTURE 12 :Tuesday, March 3rd: Violence and the International Political Order

News:

1. Discuss the implications of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress on the threat of Iran. How did the fact that Speaker of the House John Boehner invited Netanyahu to speak without clearing it with the White House affect relations between the executive and legislative branches in the U.S.? How did the speech affect partisan divisions over Israel within the U.S.? What were the potential consequences of the speech on negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program?
Domestic politics in US—institutions (Congress v. President in fp) and partisanship
Electoral politics in Israel
Long term alliance implications: support for Israel still bipartisan in US?
Consequences for Iran talks: undermining or strengthening Obama’s leverage?
Both Boehner and Netanyahu broke traditional protocol to come and speak without approval from state dept or executive officials. Democrats began to distance themselves from Israel. Some believe this damaged relations with Israel and may have indirectly supported relations with Iran. Boehner believes US is making too many concessions to Iran and has different policy approaches than Obama. This speech may give Obama more leverage in negotiations with Iran since this shows republicans will be way tougher and they should make a deal before they get into office.

Politics plays a huge role in everyone’s lives and is always a topic of discussion in today’s society. Peoples political views differ from one side of the spectrum to the other and there is really no right or wrong view, it is all personal opinion. Even the term politics has multiple definitions out there that are accepted by some and rejected by others. Dyck defines politics as “The activity in which conflicting interests struggle for advantage or dominance in the making and execution of public policies.” (Dyck, Rand, 2012). Some people believe this is a proper definition of politics while others disagree and believe other definitions are more appropriate. This paper will illustrate examples that support Dyck’s definition and how it can be…

Neorealism, a concept of international relations that emerged in 1979 by Kenneth Waltz, is a theory which forces on demonstrating how the world works instead what the world ought to be. Neorealism thinkers claim that international structure is established by its ordering principle, which is anarchy, and by the distribution of power, measured by a number of great powers, which have the largest impact on what happens in world politics.…

On January 20, 2005, President George W. Bush was sworn into office for the second time on Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. exactly four years later, on the same date and in the same location, President Barack Obama was sworn into office. Both men gave an inaugural address to the American Nation on the day of each man’s inauguration. Bush and Obama both used a great deal of allusion and rhetoric in the inaugural speeches. While Bush was speaking to a country continuing on in a war, Obama spoke to that same country only years later trying to rebuild from the war. Both men had different purposes and effectively carried them out. In giving the addresses, George W. Bush and Barack Obama made clear each man’s purpose according to the different audiences,…

"Authority and power are two different things: power is the force by means of which you can oblige others to obey you. Authority is the right to direct and command, to be listened to or obeyed by others. Authority requests power. Power without authority is tyranny." - JACQUES MARITAIN, "The Democratic Charter," Man and the State.…

The word authority derives from the Latin word auctoritas meaning invention, advice, opinion, influence or commands which originate from an auctor, indicating that authority originates from a master, leader or author. Essentially authority is imposed by superiors upon inferiors either by force of arms (structural authority) or by force of argument (sapiential authority). Usually authority has components of both compulsion and persuasion. For this reason, as used in Roman law authority is differentiated into potestas (legal or military power) and imperium (persuasive political rank or standing).…
