Gothic Elements In 'The Black Cat And Prey'
In gothic literature we can see various elements that make it unique and different from the different types of literature. In literary works like “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving, and “Prey” y Richard Matheson, gothic elements are displayed in the form of: violence, death, blood, and supernatural to show how despicable and unreal scenarios can lead people into a dangerous path. Violence can be described as the use of physical force as to injure, abuse or damage someone or something. In “The Black Cat” , vengeful acts are displayed as extremely violent and insane acts. The main character does insane acts without hurting his heart in such a way that he explains killing his wife “ I withdrew my arm from her gasp and buried the axe in her brain” (Poe 4), after she decided

Despicable acts like this are seen throughout gothic literature that make the story so much vibrant and interesting, in this case ( “The Black Cat”) the main character sees violence as normal and he feels he can act like that throughout the story. In the “Prey” violence is displayed as well, Amelia had bought a doll for her boyfriend. This doll was demonic and when the spirit of the doll was awakened Amelia was horribly attacked by the doll to the point where “ both legs were streaked with caking blood” ( Matheson 6), however she did manage to destroy the doll even though the doll was so aggressive and was displaying a noxious amount of violence. In gothic literature writers use a notorious amount of supernatural elements -which show that anything can happen even in a tranquil scenario. In “ The Devil and Tom Walker”, Tom ( the main character) was an impoverished person who sold his soul to the devil and he wasn't scared
