GOOGLE CASE.
By Glotova Tatiana, Marketing 1. * It's obviously, that the most important factor behind Google's success is their effort concentrated on developing search engine. They managed to turn the problem with the key word spam on the web into the attractive opportunity being solving it, when PageRank algorithm were created by Sergey Brin and Larry Page. The new system works like this: there were created reliable searches through the amount of websites, which than link to a certain page, or otherwise «votes» to weight the relevance of the search result.

* Another crucial factor is Google's orientation specifically on user. Customers were attracted by simplicity of interface – simple one-tone white search page and bright catchy logo. Moreover there were no ads or any content with editorial carater, which led to easy and fast search.

* As it was said earlier, a huge accent was maid on delivering to customers the informaton they was really looking for. That means that Google didn't sell search result placement to any advetisers, and if Goodle did it, all the sponsored links were umbral to the keywords of a search, so users in any case found information that was somehow useful for them.

* It was highly effective paid search that made Google very successful economically. Firstly «cost per impression» was adopted in 1999, which helped to earn independently of people clicking on an ad. After the successful experience they turned to “cost per click”, which helped to do the ratio of “cost per click” and “expected click through rate”, to make certain that users during the search get relevant information. Trying to give customers exactly what they need – rapid search and relevant useful information, they managed to maximize their revenues.

Company has created a first mover advantage by aggressively building its search engine by adding to it Google Books, Google Scholar, Google Finance, Google News, Google video, Google Images etc. which helped the user search with specific key words. The company has been able to sustain its competitive advantage as is also clear from the fact that General Sentiment, a social analytical company has ranked Google topping the list of brands with a brand value of $756.6 million even surpassing Apple’s brand value (Reisinger, 2012: Aug. 2). This is a result of its innovative products and heavy expenditure on sales and marketing. Google invested $6.143 billion in 2012 on sales and marketing which is 12.2% increase over investment of $4.589 billion in 2011 on sales and marketing (Google, 2012: n.d). There was addition of advertising expenses of $288 million in 2012 (Google, 2012: n.d) which is a reflection of how the company invests in brand building of its products. The diversification move undertaken by the company is the result of innovation at Google and extensive research and development with R&D expenses continuously increasing from $3.8 billion in 2010 to $5.2 billion in 2011 and $6.8 billion in 2012 (Google, 2012: n.d).     The birth of Google was in 1998 by two young doctoral students from Stanford University, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. They dropped out of Stanford to start up their business. In the mid-1990s searching on the internet was not efficient and time consuming. Therefore search engines helped with organizing the internet like yahoo and Alta Vista. They still did not perfect searching on the internet, so Page and Brin analyzed Web links, and they developed a ranking system for searching on the internet, that depended on the relevance to the object of the search. With the help of one of their professor they found an investor who invested $100,000 dollars. They were able to incorporate the company to Google Inc. Many other invested in their company, and finally two venture capital firms invested $25 million, Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital. With the growth of the company the revenues that were expected were not enough for the growing company. Brin and Page decide on using advertising to increase revenue. They were very strict with the standard of the advertisement meaning size and type of ads. The ads that had an association with the search would pop up. They did not run ads unless they had something to do with your search. This was very smart for Google to design this type of advertisement, because it focused on a market that was interested in that type of advertisement. This was called target advertisement. Instead of focusing on a large number of people like TV, Google focuses on a targeted market those who seeked ads with a particular search for the individual user.
