Flashback to almost eight years ago. It was my first season playing flag football, and I was probably the smallest kid on that team. In the past, I had only played soccer, but only recreationally, without score. It was hardly competitive at all, so playing flag football was a twist, and easily the most competitive activity I’ve ever participated in. Aside from that, I had just moved to Texas, so I was the new kid. Walking onto the practice field for that first time was overwhelming. There was one thing I could naturally do very well, run. I was always naturally faster than others, and could run for a good while with that second grade energy. I had scored a multitude of times that game, and felt extremely accomplished. The whole team received championship trophies and celebrated. That is the old trophy that still sits on my desk. Looking back, I wouldn’t necessarily say that winning a second grade flag football championship was my biggest accomplishment, but that one trophy led to six more years of football, my interest in lacrosse, and everything in between.
