PREFACE
The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) has initiated its current
Industry and Trade Summary series of reports to provide information on the rapidly evolving trade and competitive situation of the thousands of products imported into and exported from the United States. From 1988 to 2008, U.S. international trade in goods and services rose by almost 350 percent, compared to an increase of 180 percent in the
U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), before falling sharply in late 2008 and 2009 due to the economic downturn. During the same two decades, international supply chains became more global and competition increased.
Each Industry and Trade Summary addresses a different commodity/industry and contains information on trends in consumption, production, and trade, as well as an analysis of factors affecting industry trends and competitiveness in domestic and foreign markets. This report on apples primarily covers the period 2004 to 2008.

Papers in this series reflect on going research by USITC international trade analysts. The work does not represent the views of the United States International Trade Commission or any of its

The US experienced the great recession from the final months of 2007 to mid 2009. The crisis was characterized by massive loss of jobs and a low consumption of products as well as a downturn in investment rates in the country. Significant loss of wealth ultimately led to a decline in consumer spending and not even the slight improvement could create a great enough impact for job creation. Even as the dust was settling, high rates of population explosion worsened the situation since the economy could no longer sustain more employment and reemployment of those who had lost their jobs during the recession.…

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the market value for all goods and services produced, also known as economic output, within the U.S. during a specific time period (Mishkin, 2010). The total economic output is typically measured by GDP. The U.S. economy saw robust growth in 2004 and 2005 despite many issues including federal budget deficits, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Social Security reform, high oil prices, the looming housing bubble, and the Chinese exchange rate policy. The United States economy grew at an annual rate of 4.4% in 2004 and productivity growth is the key reason for the strong performance (Coughlin, 2005), see Attachment A. Growth in 2005 continued to exceed even the most optimistic projections reaching 4.3% in the fourth quarter.…

Many countries have particular resources that are not obtainable in the other, to meet the desires and wants of both countries so they trade. Many advantages and limits are concerned with trading. Benefits occur for each country, but there are many additional limits put into place to manage the amount and quality of international trade. Specific issues have an effect on international trade such as foreign exchange rates and government policies. All economic indicators point to the fact that the United States has been in a recession for at least a year now. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time (as defined by Gregory Mankiw in his textbook, “Brief Principles of Macroeconomics”) clearly indicates that the U.S. economy has entered a recession. Consistent with the past three recessions in the U.S. (early 80’s, early 90’s, and 2001-2003), the Real GDP’s growth rate has become increasingly volatile over the past five quarters. In fact, per the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the GDP has contracted in two of the past four quarters. According to the BEA’s Table 1.1.1…
