Going to the dentist and writing an essay are both terrifying, scary, and stressful. To me they are both like pulling teeth, except I think I would rather have all my teeth pulled out than to write an essay. No one really wants to do either. One thing I hate hearing the most is “You have to write an essay.” They are both dreadful, I get extremely nervous and get butterflies when I have a dentist appointment or an essay due. But once I’m done, I am no longer nervous. I know at some point they both have to be done.
It is not hard to see where these two events fall in my perspective. That’s right in the if I didn’t “have to”, I wouldn’t column. So you could say that is their first commonality. The bad news is it goes further than that. How many times have you awoken to the thought, “Man would I love to have my teeth cleaned today!” Probably around the same number as walking into class thinking, “I can’t wait for my next essay assignment.” You don’t look forward to it, and so every time the subjects are brought up they are met with internal and external groans. Then when the time comes, you schedule your appointment, and at the last minute you buy floss and mouthwash, just so you can say that you do use them. Similarly anytime a paper is assigned a majority of the allotted time is spent thinking about how much you don’t want to do it. All of the sudden you are out of time, you slam words onto paper just to meet the deadline by the skin of your teeth.
