Going Back to School as an Older Student.
Her last child has graduated from college, so the mother now has time to go back to college. For whatever reason the person returns to college, being back in school will reward the student with either new knowledge, self-indulgence, or new friends. One hopes for all three.

As a single mother of four children, it is my responsibility to be a positive role model for them. One of my roles is instilling how vital a college education is towards their future, which was problematic since I lacked one myself. Therefore, because children learn through example, making the decision to acquire a college degree was a necessary choice. The challenge began when it was time to decide what field of study to target, what type of school to attend, and where I envisioned myself in the future.…

Adjacent to that the author shows the readers the different experiences in which he learned the lessons that made him appreciate the opportunity to go to college. I agree with the author when he talks about “Factory life has shown me what my future might have been like had I never gone to college in the first place (Braaksma, 2005).” I agree because working a real-world job can help you see how college is possibly a better path to a successful career. I feel this way because of my own experiences working at various jobs over the years. Furthermore, when the author goes deeper into his experiences by saying “All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound trite now ring true (Braaksma,…

I look forward to that point in life where I can reflect on my life and be proud of my accomplishments. For years, not having a college degree was the biggest regret I ever had, and now that I will no longer have that, I look forward to what I will do with that. Like with Erikson’s Ego vs Despair, like Kelly, I want to be at that point in my life where I am satisfied with my life. I never felt bad, but there were moments in my work career where I would not be able to advance because I did not have a college degree. Joan Erikson and Gerotransendence, Kelly have hit that point where he is content with where his life is at and the close circle of friends that he has is what helps keep him grounded.…

Lee described how her child grew up and “graduated” on time (par. 14). In her motherly aspect, this is positive; however, kids grow to be mature at different rates and the further mature kids do have an easier time succeeding in college. The mature college kids do not think of college as a time to beige drink, oversleep, or drive recklessly as individuals may label the college experience (par 10).…

It was the day that I was dreading all week. It was the day my brother was leaving for college. Since the day i was born me and my older brother have been really close. We liked the same things, hung out with the same people, and played on the same sports teams. We did everything together. As time went on nothing really changed even through high school we were still really close. The day he was leaving for college I was at my friends house and didn’t want to go home until the minute he was leaving. I didn’t want to see him until he left because i knew it was going to be hard for me to watch him leave so i figured if i didn’t see him until he said bye it wouldn’t be as bad. Another part of me also didn’t want to show him weakness, that i was…

Reflecting back onto my senior year; my father had recently gotten a job promotion, my sister was attending Duke University, and I established relationships with my animals. The topic I choose for my personal essay to send to college was not hard to figure out. My first horse was brought to me at 4 months old, where she strode away from human contact. After she gained trust, she grew to become wild and engaged in attention. Visitors would stop by her pasture to watch her prance and buck through the hills of the forest. Her personality reflected my own. Moving to North Carolina helped me create an identity for myself, while traveling to Cuba before starting college helped me gain confidence with…

My mother was a child in the sixties and a teenager in the seventies. During this time, educational opportunities for women expanded, as well as female participation in sports, politics, and business. My mother decided to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher at Bridgewater State College. She says, “For me, it was never a question of going to college. It was an expectation.” She received an undergraduate degree in secondary education and English and a master’s degree in high school educational administration. For my mother, teaching was about empowering other girls to pursue their desired careers. She wanted to be a positive female role model for her students. Teaching has also given my mother opportunities to travel. She taught overseas in Greece at the American Community School and now regularly takes her classes on trips to Europe on school vacations. Recently, she has taken students to Italy, France, Germany, England, and Greece. Today, she teaches at Hopkinton High School. In contrast to her mother, Marie is a single mother with one child. Education allows woe to be more financially independent. A generation prior to my mother's, women simply could not afford to be single parents. As a clear example of how the times and expectations have changed, Marie states, “I wanted a daughter who could be a strong woman, for whom higher education wasn’t even a…
